Very good skunk trap - and I'm picky
I've caught 5 skunks in about 6 mos. with this trap. It isn't perfect but it is the best one I've used. Believe me, I've been doing this awhile and no trap is 100% effective every time. Some older skunks are very wise and learn how to trip traps before they enter. But this is the best one I've found.Positives:- They can't spray - in all the skunks I've caught, I've never been sprayed. Just pick up the trap with the skunk inside and walk it to wherever you want for easy disposal.- Once they trigger it they can't escape - unless they roll it - see below on how to prevent that.- Durable and well made - should last for years.- Skunks seem to like to tunnel so the "tube" style seems to work much better than the "cage" style. I've tried them side-by-side.Negatives:- Skunks can roll it over and escape if you don't prevent it. You should bolt or clip it to a small piece of wood (say 24" 2x4) or plywood wide enough to prevent the roll. I just clip the metal frame on front to a scrap board that's about 1"x2"x18".- It sometimes takes a few tries to catch a smart skunk. Don't get frustrated if they trip the trap and it is empty. Just bate it well and they'll be back. Unless they're too big, you'll eventually get them.- Diameter is a bit too small. Really big skunks can't fit. They should make it 2" bigger diameter. I looked on Amazon to add a bigger unit but couldn't find one. The manufacturer really should increase the diameter.

Worked like a charm
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is it doesn't come with directions. I had a little trial and error with it. I was at my ends wit with a skunk who twice sprayed right outside the air unit for my central air and had the whole house smelling. Once was at 3 AM.The first night I tried it, the skunk got the bait but the lid didn't catch. I used a vanilla Oreo, split, with Peanut Butter. But the mistake I made was putting it on top of the "lever" in the back. The lever is connected to a rod that runs to the top of the trap to an outside bolt that latches the trap door. Problem is, by setting the bait ON the lever, it doesn't cause the bolt to "lift" springing the door. The next night, more peanut butter but under the lever so it would lift the lever -> lift the rod and bolt -> and release the trap door. You can see inside through the holes but I suggest looking in the front end rather than near the door, just in case. How you decide to dispose of it is up to you. Some people mention drowning or releasing it. The skunk I caught was bigger than a cat and stuck so that would not have been an option anyway.

Worked like a charm
I've caught 2 skunks in 3 days (the wife feeds stray cats outside..but only skunks come around). I've used catfood as bait (even put some under the trigger). To release the skunk, I tip the trap on end, Ductape the door open, I swing the trap from side to side, over a bank, to have the skunk slid out and go their marry way. Easy to use. Highly recommend.

An OK trap which needs some modifications and design improvements.
I bought this trap to deal with the skunk infestation in my neighborhood. I have had some success with this trap, but only after some modifications. The trigger for the trap door is poorly designed and requires too much pressure on the bate plate to trigger the door. The skunk would often make off with the bait without triggering the trap door. I corrected this somewhat by using a moto tool to grind down and smooth the sharp edges on the nut used to hold open the trap door. I also smoothed the edges of the hole in the trap door where nut goes through. You also need to put a bit of oil or grease on the nut to ensure it will release the door when slight pressure is applied. After these modifications I have succeeded in trapping a number of skunks.Another weakness in the design is that the door spring is exposed inside the trap. I once trapped an opossum and it chewed up and completely deformed the spring. They don't sell replacement springs for this trap so I just ordered the "101 Spring Assortment" on Amazon and found one in there that worked. The spring which comes with the trap is too strong anyway so a weaker one worked better for the trap door trigger. If you are planning to release the trapped skunk you should know that there is no release door. You will have to open the trap door and hope the skunk doesn't spray you on the way out. If you are planning do away with the skunk by drowning or gassing it in the trap then you should also know that the skunk may still spray inside the trap before it dies and leave you with a stinky mess to clean up. I can say from experience that the skunks tend to spray the least if you wait until the afternoon and let it fall fast asleep inside the trap before you try to drown or gas it.Overall, I have made good use of this trap but I guess I would buy a slightly different design next time; one with a release door and a vertical sliding trap door like they sell on some other sites.

Frustration trap!
We have a young skunk living under the deck outside our bedroom. He's still there, despite setting up this trap every night. We actually watched him through the window one night. He went up to the trap, which was baited with cat food and marshmallows. He turned for a moment and his tail brushed the door, then bam! the trap door snapped shut. The skunk was startled and ran away. Next night we made sure the door was tighter (not easy to do, given the way the thing is designed). The next morning the trap was on its side, door still open, but the cat food and marshmallows had been eaten. The third night we re-baited and secured the door and trap so it wouldn't roll over. The next morning the trap was on its side again and the door was sprung. But no skunk inside. This little guy is getting fat from our trap! In my opinion this trap is worthless. Save your money.
