Sketchbook: Composition Studies for Film

This is such a wonderful art book and resource for those interested in composition. I'm a little sad at the low reviews of this book simply because it's a sketchbook rather than instructional--Bacher states that it's simply a sketchbook on page 8! Regardless, there is so much information you can just glean from the sketches that it's well worth the price.If you're new to the craft of composition, I would wholly recommend  Dream Worlds: Production Design for Animation  and  Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers  to start off first before getting this. Bacher is a master of his craft and I hope he puts out more books like this one!

Honestly I'm very unsure why the other reviews are so negative.... this is a great book with wonderful sketches by Hans Bacher.I hope people remember it's titled "Sketchbook". It's just a collection of some of his sketches which are fantastic! Awesome book! =)

Bought as a gift for my husband. Great book according to him.

Could have been a bit better with possibly "end results" after the layout sketches demonstrated on this book.

So-so book, with some nice cartoon drawings. Book is not terribly well thought out, written, or designed, though. Text and images rarely explain or work with each other. Gets rather repetitive.

Poorly designed. Terribly simplistic drawings. Does not clearly convey thoughts or processes. Text is extremely minimal in a book that desperately needs more to explain the material. Backer's previous books are great, but this one falls dramatically short of expectations and fails to deliver on many levels.

What a beautiful book. It is comprised entirely of sketches exploring composition ideas within a cinematic/TV frame.A little annotation would have been nice in places, but for the most part, the images speak for themselves and benefit from the purely visual approach. The lack of colour, and detail ensures the focus stays upon the composition of the elements within the frame.Get this book if you want to kick start your imagination, especially at the planning and storyboarding stage.

I personally love Hans Bacher drawings! They are a goldmine for someone interested in film and composition. While this book certainly has a lot of drawings, I'm always left wanting more written explanation for some shot choices.

Podría completar con varias hojas de texto las imágenes del libro, pero pretendía recibir nueva información adaptada a la actualidad de los medios.Me gustó la gran variedad de composiciones.Me desagrada la sensación de que el autor y el editor no se esforzaron demasiado y solamente nos exponen unos brevísimos comentarios plagados de imágenes muy,pero muy rápidas.Pareciera que se trata de un libro muy bien editado pero solamente por ir sobrados de medios económicos.Recomendaría este libro A CUALQUIER ILUSTRADOR, E INCLUSO ARTISTA PLÁSTICO, si su precio se bajara al menos un 50% para tener un catálogo de composiciones tonales efectivas, (ENTIENDO QUE desarrolladas a partir del método de HOWARD PYLE-ANDREW LOOMIS)

I was very disappointed with this book. So much so that I returned it. I was hoping for a much more thorough explanation of Bacher's process and theories of composition. All the examples were great but with no explanations the book ended up being next to useless for me.

Un ottimo libro per lo studio di shape, e ombre e luci. Per capire le distanze e la profondità di campo.
