From the Back Cover In the dry African soil, more than half a million years ago, was established the Kura tribe, a matriarchal society of homo erectus. Snap-a passionate and young woman of the tribe is destined to lead her people, and this year she must choose a mate for the first time. Will she choose someone different every year, or will she prefer a male to mate ever, as did her mother, Whistle, the prior leader of the tribe? As the ceremony is to come, Snap's future remains uncertain. But Whistle, when her partner does not return, will elect a foreigner with ideas much more dangerous than lions killing with one blow ... When Snap challenged the power of the Snap foreigner, she is violently expelled from the tribe. Abandoned, she risks her life and future of her people-to confront an unthinkable evil. Without knowing, the same danger threatens other tribes. Soon, Snap and her new band of exiles will face a terrifying and deadly force rather than any natural hazard that Africa has ever seen. As imaginative as credible, the daughter of the tribe gives life to a honored and wild time. Austin has created an unforgettable character in the skin of this indomitable heroine who will mature into a gripping tale of courage, loyalty and passion. Read more
