Excellence in all subjects and Inspriational! A Definite 5-Star Book in My Library!
First off, all the other reviewers are right on the mark when it comes to this book, yet I wanted to add a few words that might help others choose this book for their library. For one, the page on the subject "Inspired to Design" is just the beginning of the subject covered in detail through the rest of the book, but its place at the beginning is so true - test projects on paper before using fabric and thread. A must do and often ignored when the lovely fabrics, delicate threads, and other embellishments come before us on our creating table. Yet if we do use paper, ink, paint and collage FIRST, we may be able to decrease error in judgement or come up with a more inspiring product. Artists, like me, often just want to dive in, yet this book really provides the information and inspiration to do it right. Excellent words. Plus the subtle reminders of safety when using some products is also extremely important to me and the authors remind us all to keep this knowledge foremost in our minds. The images that go along with the instructions are often more beneficial than the words, often the other way around in other books, but this one does it right. THE PAINTED QUILT is a fascinating read from cover to cover and, YES, fiber/fabric artists will refer to this book over and over again, if not for guidance, for definite inspiration.

excellent for the artist quilter
As a practicing artist just new to quilting, I found this book is a boon for ideas. The first section on inspiration using drawing, collage and printing exemplified by great artist journal examples is a great example of how to get started working out how to approach your art quilt. I found the chapters on planning particularly interesting, (and practical)looking at fabric and colour before you quilt through to adding colour afterwards. These techniques were all backed up with great illustrated examples and easy to follow step-by-step directions on how to get the great results detailed. All other sections are extremely well described, and are a great resource for anyone wanting to know a variety of techniques, what they look like and how to achieve them. The Painted Quilt is also a great book to just open and read.. pleasing images and well written descriptions of techniques make it great to just dip into any time you want some inspiration. This is definately the book for the artist who wants to make quilts... I would highly recommend this to any artist who wants to quilt, or any quilter who wants to expand into a more creative quilting experience. Excellent stuff...

Creating Dimensional Quilts
The Painted Quilt by Linda & Laura Kemshall is a gem of a book for anyone interested in learning some fabulous tricks on ways to paint or print on textiles or quilts. The book was first published in 2007, my copy was a 2008 reprint. Divided into nine chapters, each chapter is loaded with concise instructions and color images. Included are many of the finished quilts of this very talented mother-daughter artistic team. Some of the methods included are how to transfer images, using fusible web, and how to combine paint, crayons, pastels or dyes to get stunning results on your finished quilts. If you are looking for process AND technique, as well as insightful comments from the author's on their innovative approaches, this book won't disappoint. Their love of drawing and art is easily translated to the viewer.I bought my copy used on Amazon and it came in excellent condition. Very good value.

Stunning Art Quilt Book
Linda and Laura Kemshall are two British quilt and surface designers who have a regular column in "Quilting Arts" magazine. The subtitle of this book is "Paint and Print Techniques for Color on Quilts". It includes discussions about design, inspiration, drawing, collage, printing, oil pastels (rubbings and using pastels after quilting), health and safety, handling fabrics, immersion dyeing, painting with dyes, stencilling, block printing, screen printing, monoprinting, painting after quilting, rollering with a brayer, spraying, discharging, painting fusible web, gels and fabric pens, dimensional paints, adding text, pictorial and figurative images, ink-jet printing, photocopy transfers, fabric and acrylic paints and a number of series quilts that the authors have made. The book is replete with lavish photographs that will provide inspiration for anyone who wants to work with these media. This is not a basic handbook, however, but there are a number of those that can be used for more information on the techniques that are included in this volume. This belongs in the library of anyone interested in surface design on fabric.

... was interesting and some of her work I really liked. She does beautiful free motion quilting
This book was interesting and some of her work I really liked. She does beautiful free motion quilting, but I'm not sure if I would paint over it, that's my opinion, but there are some good tips inside the book. I enjoyed it.

Great book shame about quality of paper
My wife asked for this as a birthday gift this week. When she opened it her first comment was that it was a great book but she was surprised that the paper was not of a better quality. This concerned her because it is a book she will use often to develop her own versions of some of the fantastic range of techniques. After three days being stored flat on a table when not being read it is already starting to buckle. The explanation appears to be that this is not the original publication but Printed in Great Britain by Amazon, which appears on the page facing the inside back cover. We think Amazon should declare when books are printed on demand, it may be OK for fiction but not for art books which are used often.Content is five star, book itself only two.

Not just for quilts.....
This is a book which anyone who wants to colour fabric can use, not just quilts. The techniques and processes are clearly explained using accessible, available and affordable materials. At first glance the layout may appear a little wordy in places but there is plenty of eye-candy, and the words (when you stop drooling over the pictures)tell you exactly what you need to know to get started. This book encourages you to experiment and evolve your own techniques. The techniques can be undertaken in an artists studio or a domestic kitchen!

wide range of different ideas, and not just for quilters!
This is a lovely book with lots of different ideas and techniques for creating colour and pattern on fabric, not just quilts. The techniques are approached in a sensible step by step way to enable anybody to try them out. The authors take you through all the different ways of painting, printing, dyeing, stencilling etc onto fabric, both before and after quilting. I would recomend this book to any textile or collage artist, not just quilters.

The second book looks like a photo copy - the quality of the paper ...
This is the second copy of the book received, The first copy had 8 blank pages, so was returned. The quality of the second book is appalling. The first book had lovely glossy pages but had 8 missing pages. The second book looks like a photo copy - the quality of the paper is thin and not glossy and the colour of the print is faded as often photocopies look. Extremely disappointed. Not what I expect from Amazon.
