Michael Morpurgo can't be beat!
I love Michael Morpurgo. He is a wonderful writer. I was captivated at once and sadly finished the book in a flash. I really wish it had lasted longer. A great choice for kids looking for an historical novel for their book report.

Would NOT Recommend for 10 Year Olds
A MEDAL FOR LEROY is a nice story but I have to say that the recommended guidelines given for it are more than a bit skewed. For 10 year olds. Really?I mean we have some really horrendous prejudice going on in this book, and there's a mother pretending that her baby belonged to someone else (who was killed), and people lying for decades; and I can't imagine that a 10 year old would be fascinated by this, nor that every parent would want to sit down and have to explain 'how these things happen'.The story itself is one that adults and Young Adults should like. The setting isn't very well described so it really could have taken place at any time. And the story within a story really works for this tale.A MEDAL FOR LEROY is very slow to start. The first 68 pages basically are used to describe Micheal's life with his mother, two aunts and their dog. But after that, the history gains momentum.--I don't recommend it as a history supplement. There's really nothing that attaches the story the time frame covered, other than the specific mention of dates and the wars.--It certainly could be used as the basis of a discussion of prejudice and how insidiously evil it is.

Got my 11 year old to read a book!
Personally, I find Morpurgo's style quite irritating but I bought this one as the person it is inspired by- Walter Tull - is one of my heroes. It's nice to see awareness of his life being raised in what will be a bestseller for Morpurgo. I think this one will appear as a school reader in the not too distant future because it deals with an issue not tackeld in other war books for children . It is simpler than War Horse and Private Peaceful, tells an important story , and got my reluctant (but fluent) 11 year old boy reading and is now being read by my avid reader 8 year old. The older one gobbled this up in two sittings and declared it 'the best book he's read', which is saying something if it deposes Wimpy Kid!! You also still don't come across many children's book where the central character is not white and middle class. This may seem a bit preachy to an adult reader but my son appreciated the issues and it raises questions of racism in an accessible way. Morpurgo's afterword is very interesting, explaining who Walter Tull was - and telling of other black soldiers in other conflicts. The only quibble... Tull played for Spurs , and then Northampton (It's one of the reasons I bought the book for my Spurs fan sons). Why on earth would an author change that to Arsenal? That's almost insulting! This book has some nice drawings and large print. I would say it could be read by children from 8 (although there is some lovey dovey stuff and a pregnancy) to 12.

Secret Lives
A Medal For Leroy by Michael Morpurgo is a powerful, historical children’s novel that will educate you as you read. It is grounded in facts and based loosely on the life of Walter Tull. We hear about his actual life in the back of the book. He was a black soldier in World War I who never received the medal he deserved, for countless acts of bravery. The story is a dual timeline – after World War II and during World War I in the form of a letter. We ‘hear’ about the lives of elderly aunties who were young women during World War I.We see the racial prejudice that existed in the first part of the twentieth century. Some saw the heart that beats beneath, others could not get past the colour of one’s skin. It is heartbreaking to read. There was also a stigma attached to unmarried mothers. This is distressing to witness.Secrets and lies in order to protect the innocent were the order of the day. When the time is right, the truth will come out.All the characters were well drawn, likable and realistic.I thoroughly enjoyed A Medal For Leroy. I will leave you with my favourite quote:“It’s only in forgiving that we find real peace of mind.”
