Kids loved it
We bought this as a compromise gift for my son who wanted a pet turtle 😂The ants were easy to order and most arrived alive (though that's a completely unrelated purchase) so we started with close to 50 ants on August 16. We followed instructions and bored a few small holes and let the ants do the rest. the attached photo is Dec 12 when the last ant died. we did have to remove a good bit of the material the ants dug up as well as some of the dead bodies through the process, but overall a very easy process.I strongly warn against using the LED lights for very long. my son left them on overnight one day and the gel started to weep around the sides, ants were distressed and the overall colony was not thriving. we cleaned it up, aired them out and they were good as new.

Cool concept, but.
No promo for the ants. Had to pay separate. Overall good experience. Kids enjoyed it

Nope
Bought this afyer reading the reviews. Followed instructions to the letter. After 3 weeks we have had hardly any tunnels dug by our harvest ants (sold separately). They were all at the top dying and looking lethargic. During the first week one or two tunnels were dug and the ants digging died in them. Some of the other ants tried to retrieve them post mortem. Ant body part pieces were everywhere. My son thought they ate an ant or two, or juat destroyed them. My son decided their light get too hot so he doesnt leave them plugged in. The 2nd week, finally 2 tunnels dug to middle and bottom. At this time the power cord light connection became very touchy. Turned on and off easily from a gentle touch of the ant farm. Suddenly mold appeared and the live ones still hang out at the top looking slow and lethargic. I took the ants and gel out, cleaned, scraped, and added some sand, seeds, and cotton balls for water. These poor ants are constantly cleaning themselves. I don't have the right substrate or I would take the gel out completely. Shoping for a new antfarm because the ventilation on this one is severely lacking among all the other issues listed.

Fun to watch
All the ants died either from the gel or I don't know lol. My grandson liked watching them, but couldn't find the queen. We ordered the ants also from Amazon. They were easy to maintain.

Great for kids!
Ok the quality of this is great but ordering the ants is a bit of a miss. I ordered them and they took like a month and then they came packaged in a Manila envelope with some foam around it. The ants were in a small vial and most of them had been dismembered and they were all dead. But the quality of this product was great. Just beware of ordering the ants! Can’t wait to get some love ants for my son to use this!

Be Patient
This was a Christmas gift but we didn't use it until June. We collected ants from the yard. I put a few drops of honey just inside the rim of a Solo cup and laid it at the entrance of an active ant hill. We had about 30 in less than 2 hours. We brought the farm to the ant hill, took the lid off and tapped the cup so they fell in. They didn't do much AND I forgot to start the trails by piercing the gel in a few places. When I remembered, I accidentally pierced a lot deeper than recommended. They never used my trails. My grandson let some out here and there. =/. They didn't start making tunnels until over a WEEK later so you may need to be patient. We often thought most of them were dead. They were in a pile all crumpled up in the lower corner. But they weren't. A few did die and we removed them promptly with a q tip. The bright blue picture was a week after putting in the ants. The next two pictures are almost 3x weeks later. And they're tunneling from the bottom. They seem to move quicker when the light is first on but we don't leave it on. I will buy this again or buy the refill if that's possible as my grandson grows. He is 3 1/2. He enjoys watching them for short periods under supervision. It is kept out of his reach but where he can see it clearly. We all enjoy watching it for longer periods.
