Wow. Just...wow.
This book is AMAZING!!! I don't know if I've ever read a book as good as this. And I don't usually like science-y books. This book is written so good it makes you believe it's happening and you're there. So here's the basic story without giving too much away:There are 6 kids; Cat (age 12), Quinton (age 13), Sarah (age 12), Trent (age 13), Kaylee (age 14), and Ben (age 13). They all have had severe concussions and suffer post-concussion illnesses. They all live in different parts of the country (Cat from California, Sarah from Virginia, Ben from Washington, Quinton from Georgia, Trent from New York, and Kaylee from Colorado). They each either do some digging, or the doctor in charge of the advanced neurology center finds them, but they all end up at this hospital in Florida specifically for kids with post-concussion illness. This hospital is almost like a resort, (or so it seems) with pools, basketball hoops, volleyball nets, cafeteria, tv, spacey rooms, your own bathroom, etc. But no phone reception. They have to stay there for up to 8 weeks I think it was, so they can get treatment. Since none of them live in FL their parents have to leave them there. They all think nothing of it, until one day Trent never comes back from treatment. He had promised Sarah a game of basketball, and she was pretty mad he never showed up. Let me tell you a little about Trent for a second. He's the kinda kid you want to be friends with. He's funny, likes to joke around, play sports and games, swim, and he's not too good at school. When Cat, Sarah, Quinton, and Ben find him in an old airplane hangar near the hospital with wires and gadgets and plugs and light bulbs and all kinds of stuff all around him, and he's so absorbed in it he doesn't even hear them practically banging on the window, things start to look suspicious. To make it even weirder, Dr. Ames (the guy in charge) had just told Cat a few days ago Trent was all better and had went home. Also, if you noticed, I didn't really mention Kaylee since the beginning. Her treatment went terribly wrong and turned into a brain tumor. The bad part? Dr. Ames WASN'T TELLING HER PARENTS!!All this makes Ben, Sarah, Cat, and Quinton really wonder about things. Read this awesome book to find out what happens. I've never read anything by Kate Messner before, but I'll definitely be looking for more!! I would recommend this to kids ages 12-15 but no younger because a couple people die and they might think it's scary (there aren't many details though). I'm 13 and I wasn't really scared. It's a real page turner though :)If you liked this book you should definitely get "Double Identity" by Margaret Peterson Haddix which is another one of my favorites.Hope this helped you choose this book :D

Original Scientific Premise
Northbrook Jr.High had this on their summer reading list. Since my student loves science fiction, this seemed like a great choice. The novel moves at a brisk pace, well developed characters, novel setting, and creative premise. The climax came too early and the suspense dampened somewhat near the end. However, we had great discussions about the Everglades, the advent of genetic engineering and what it will mean for our future world, & some of the famous scientists mentioned.

A YA Must Read!
This is an outstanding YA book full of mystery and suspense. My son (11 y) tore through it as a required summer reading assignment. You will enjoy all aspects of it. Kate Messner gets how to write for this age group and puts a ton of research into making her writing authentic.

Meh
Really not my kind of book. The Kids were incredibly stupid and annoying, it also wasn't possible to connect with the characters so I didn't really care about what happened to them. The action and all the science stuff was okay but not good enough to make up for the rest.
