It's a good remake.
This movie is decently done but I'm still partial to Allan Arkin and all the other stars in the original. I'm old and stuck in my ways.

Hilarious
This book is hilarious. I read it through non stop in 1972 while stationed overseas in Germany. Years later it was made into a movie and it didn’t do the book justice(could be me). I’d lost my copy in my many military moves. That’s why I purchased a new one. Enjoy & be prepared to laugh out loud and often.

Important literature belongs on every bookshelf
I first read this book as a Sophomore in High School and the report I wrote got an "A" but not because I was a good student--it just clicked something inside me that made me want to read more. Unlike "The Scarlet Letter" and such, this book addressed the really dark side of the military and war, a dark side that really exists. The realization that the whole book was the flashback, that review of the dying man's life thing, made this book even more of a draw.I bought it for my Son and his family and I hope this all read it for it is written in a way that weaves stories within stories. It is the first book I read that I didn't want to put down. Thankfully I have found other authors who write such books in many genre.

I wanted to like it more...
As a fan of the novel, I found the original movie to be a surprisingly high quality interpretation, even by today's moving-making standards. The series, however, not so much. From a cinematic perspective, it's what one would expect from Clooney and crew. From a story-telling perspective, I don't feel they captured the "tone" or the intent of the story. The irony and tragic humor of the book never made it onto the screen. The book's basically a farce. A tragic one to be sure, much like M*A*S*H. And that's where the delicate tight-rope act is needed. I hoped the mini-series would provide plenty of time to develop the nuance of the book, but instead, time was wasted on side stories - some not even in the book - in addition to much in-depth time on Milo's gambits, which in the end, didn't add anything to the core tale. And speaking of the end, the producers/directors exercised much artistic license with the ending. Always a risky choice, and the choice for this series' ending didn't hold up. The book concluded with an uplifting, if unlikely, final thrust by the protagonist to prevail against the war machine. The series went the opposite direction, with our hero broken by his experience, and essentially giving up.The ending changes everything, which IMHO, didn't work. My advice, read the book and watch the original Mike Nichols movie.
