Miralax for older children and adults is great.
As a doctor, I remembered when Miralax was first marketed and reading the GI journals. The most impressive conclusion was when a leading journal reviewed almost all medical treatments we had been prescribing, and to paraphrase the last paragraph, there were many treatments for constipation, but Miralax was the best they had come across, if it could be afforded. At that time, Miralax was by prescription. I put my parents on it right away since they'd had regular colonoscopies. My dad, the old Marine D.I., said it was the best medicine ever invented. But PLEASE, make sure you and your pediatrician work on a child's problems, constantly. They are not LITTLE ADULTS. You definitely cannot just adjust a dose by weight. And any pediatrician, not a G.P. (Sorry, that's what sent too many kids to my E.R.) unless that G.P. works closely with a pediatrician, should be challenged if they just prescribe a dose based on that. Water is drawn into the bowel and a child can die of dehydration, quickly, or suffer brain damage from decreased water molecules in the fluid around the brain. It's complicated. Just don't ever get too used to any med for a child under about 16 years old, but especially under 6 years of age. Saw a raw honey ad on TV today. That was used, and may still be by some, to loosen a baby's stools. Don't. No child under 12 months has the ability to fight the clostridium bolutlinum bacterium (botulism) found in raw, unprocessed honey, like adults can. An example of an old wive's trick that was fatal then and now. The first sign of botulism in a baby is no breathing. We see now what we haven't for 30 years.
