Cartomancy with the Lenormand and the Tarot: Create Meaning & Gain Insight from the Cards

Theory AND pratcticum
A lot of tarot books get so lost in the minutiae that it's hard to understand what they're saying. Or they focus on thelemic or psychological details so much that it's nigh impossible to make heads or tails of their ideas, much less apply them practically, unless you've been studying hermetic traditions, astrology, and the Qabala for years. Not so with this excellent book!Dunn covers a lot of theory about how divination works, how it can be done, and the like, but he does it in a no-nonsense way that was easy to understand, made sense, and didn't come across as an absolute. Even more, he treats divination as communication (with the Anima Mundi, or Spirit of the World), and uses standard and newly emerging understandings about communication, which makes for a fascinating and though-provoking read.I like that he was very clear about tradition and his additions, and that the line between Tarot and Lenormand that most other authors make (and I despise), he quietly explains away. Lenormand can be just as psychological and metaphoric, and Tarot can be just as practical - it's all in the symbols, and how you use them. Predisposition exists (and he explains why), but he makes it clear that doesn't have to limit you.It doesn't cover basic techniques of reading Lenormand (or Tarot), so I would call it an Intermediate or Advanced level text, but it's worth getting and reading even if you are a beginner, just for the theory, and the useful practical exercises.

Buy this book!
I love this book! It is the best intermediate to advanced book on cartomancy that I have ever read. This book is not for beginners. To start out with Lenormand get Rana George's book or Caitlin Matthews' book and read for a while and then come to this book. There are plenty of beginning Tarot books out there and different people have different needs so I won't recommend one specific book.Normally I shy away from combining divination systems. They seem complete in and of themselves, but I am desperate to read anything in English about Lenormand (I am monolingual). I broke down and ordered this book. It was the last one I could find. I was scraping the bottom of the barrel so to speak. However, there are only two chapters on combining the two systems and they really made me think and now I do combine the systems when I am looking for certain kinds of information. The book is really about Lenormand AND Tarot and not WITH Tarot. The book teaches you how to flex your intuitive muscles to access as much information as possible from the cards. Many readers of Lenormand may object to approaching the cards in this way, but the insight that I have gained from Mr. Dunn's techniques has given me light years worth of insight.Patrick Dunn is a linguist and knows how to handle the English language which makes for a smooth, informative read.Every card reader should have a copy of this book in their library.

Three Stars
I am new to the Lenormand deck and I did find this book informative. Especially, the references to the 4 elements and correlation with the zodiac. Great book to work with.

An Excellent Book
This is a wonderful book. I recommend it to anyone who is going to be using both Tarot and Lenormand cards and who is well-experienced with cartomancy. It's not a book a beginner would make best use of, but I do recommend it to beginners for the simple fact that sometimes books go out of print and become exorbitantly over-priced for used copies. Books don't usually go out of print as quickly as decks do, but I'm one who prefers to be prepared. This book is a "keeper" that will remain in my Tarot library for years to come.Patrick's writing style is very easily understood and I've learned a lot from this book. I haven't finished the whole book yet but have skimmed ahead and it gets more and more interesting as I go. It's wonderful.

Insightful and Thought Provoking Book
Initially I had gotten this book out from my library but after having to remind myself time after time that I couldn't underline a passage or comment, I knew I had best add this to my personal library. I am glad I did, there is plenty I will enjoy referring back to. Dunn's book is a thoughtful, and as I said, insightful and quietly passionate look into cartomancy. He pulls out many facets of his extensive education to give us the conceptual underpinnings of these two systems. I couldn't be more grateful that he did. Comparing and contrasting the social, political, philosophical and class differences that brought about the creation/recreation of the Tarot and the Lenormand, he allowed me a more confident basis for understanding more about the one I knew for decades (Tarot) and a great exposure to the one I am brand new to, (Lenormand). He gives you enough to start learning Lenormand spreads without overwhelming yourself thinking you must do Le Grand Tableau right away, and gives means to understanding Lenormand meanings, and even overlaps to the Tarot. I found it a great place to begin, providing a firm foundation to continue my learning from.

An Original Spin on an Old Topic
I read both Tarot and the LeNormand, and even seemlessly together. Dunn has provided a lovely way for the novice (be she/he a Tarot or LeNormand reader) wanting to incorporate or simply understand the "other" card type of reading. He explains the similarities between the two systems and the definite differences - as in the Tower isn't the same Tower etc. It was an interesting and relaxing read, and one I will probably refer to on occassion when teaching my own classes.

I will not recommend it to no one
The Author has no understanding of Lenormand and even of the Tarot, is spread reading does not make sense. I will not recommend it to no one.

Easy read, appropriately thourough
Mr. Dunn writes in a very accessible style - almost conversational - that makes this book a very easy read. He touches on subjects as they are appropriate and gives more detail where necessary.PERFECT for the beginner Lenormand reader!

Um olhar mais filosófico
Eu esperava uma abordagem mais prática, mas de qualquer modo algumas reflexões propostas pelo livro são bem interessantes.

Do not buy this book. A complete waste of money.
According to the description of this book: "Looking for deeper meaning in the cards? Learn how to combine the little-known Lenormand deck with the tarot for richer, more personal readings. An expert in symbolic language, author Patrick Dunn describes how the symbolism of the Lenormand, so accessible and simple, can shine a clear light on the tarot, while the cosmology and philosophy of the tarot can lend depth and meaning to the Lenormand. " this to me is misleading. If you're looking how to learn to read tarot and Lenormand in combination, a couple of pages with little diagrams is all you get. Only the majors are used, not the minors. Also you get a couple of keywords per card, which would be fine, but for some reason only for the cards I, II, III and IV. No keywords for the other 18 cards??? The rest of the book is just filings about other kinds of divination which might be ok if you are interested. This book is more like a written essay that the author indulged himself in with ltlle practical application. At $25 is an expensive Ebook which I would gladly return to get my money back.

Interesting but difficult
You need a strong cultural equipment in order to follow the philosophical chapter...not very practical, yet interesting. You havo to know quite well tarot as well as lenormand. Sort of advanced level.

This book is a Shame
i am sorry but the meanings - the wild and crude Mix of Tarot and Lenormand comes out of a ill brain. Safe ur money - and dont buy it - typicall only Llewellyn can publish such a bulls*** - this has nothing to do with Cartomancy and Lenormand - i am really angry paying for such a dumb book!
