Every year this is a must have for our hs curriculum. The kids enjoy and understand the material very well. It's easy but creative. Overall EM Daily Writing and Daily Reading Comprehension are great learning tools for our classroom.

Great Homeschool Writing Supplement for 6th Grade
This is our first year of home school (hopefully many more to come). Our daughter is in 6th grade (11), and she is a burgeoning writer. She loves writing and telling stories. I purchased this work book to supplement her language arts spine and giver her writing an edge. I love how this book breakds down into units of the 6 traits to writing. It's been extremely helpful thus far, and my daughter enjoys working through the assignments. Each page of work (1 day) takes her about 15-20 max. This is a great supplemental tool for her education. I highly recommend.

Great supplementary book
This book is set-up as the primary source to teach writing using the 6-writing traits. Each trait has a dedicated week and day (i.e. "voice" is taught in Week 2 with a different assignment for each day of the week and labeled as such Week 2 Day 1, 2, etc.) Most of the assignments are relevant and my students understand them, as they are written clearly and concisely.I teach 7th grade in a "at-risk" Title I school, with a high refugee population, in a city that doesn't value education. My students are primarily second language learners that come to me with little to no background knowledge about the English language and zero writing skills. I constantly have to think of new ways to keep them invested and interested in school. In my class, I cannot use this book as it was intended, because it is a little dry and students lose interest immediately. However, this bookis a great supplement to my lesson plans. I can use the individual assignments to reteach and reiterate important points if I feel that the students did not understand. This book is a great reference, it has given me some great ideas that build upon my current lesson plans for teaching writing and also shown me what I might additionally need to add to a lesson to get more "light-bulb" moments.I recommend this book as a supplemental resource, but it is not the answer to writing effective lesson plans for teaching writing. It is a good start, or can help you add to existing plans - but I do not think that if you used this book as the primary reading source, that your students would get all the information they need about writing.

Gentle, yet thorough!
I'm a new homeschooling mom. I bought Lucy Calkins book, "Writing Pathways" because I wanted to give my kids a writing checklist for the days when we revise our first drafts. She breaks the checklist down into three parts: Structure, Development, and Conventions. I like to combine "Six Trait Writing" with "Four Square Writing" to get all the lessons we need to be able to fill out the checklist. Together, the books thoroughly explain everything the kids need to know. Yet they don't overwhelm my kids, which I love!

Wonderful for warm ups
These are a great warm up for my sixth grade students. What I do is print 30 front and back copies (they write the answers on their own paper) on Friday afternoon and on Monday, while greeting them at the door, I hand them their warm up and they know exactly what to expect and what to do. I've seen many questions that reflect the Common Core as well as essential knowledge information for their future. After 10 minutes or so, we'll go over the answers together and discuss the questions. I usually allot 10 minutes for this depending on the content of the questions. This is really a great book and has made my life a thousand times easier.

Great for working one or two pages a day with your child. Short enough where they don't feel overtasked and simple. However, it gets the lesson across.

answer key is unremovable
My child will always take the easy way out and since the answers are on the back of work pages I cannot remove any of them. He does not learn this way. I think it would be great if the answer key was all at the back and could be removed, however, it was a waste of money for us.
