Great read based on my home town
Great read based on my home town. I couldn't put it down and ordered other copies for my family. If you know anything about Rainy Lake it was fun to picture the events (if you don't well you'll just have to come visit). And yes, we've heard the stories about the old days. Now Mary had intertwined a story based on facts again. Love every one of your books Mary!

Small font in the hardback edition
I bought the hardback version of Ice Out because hardbacks usually have a more readable font. Careful! This hardback is printed in what looks like an 8 point font. It may be that Kindle is the way to go for Ice Out if you're over 40 or you wear glasses. I cannot really comment on the story yet.

Historical Fiction with Romance set in Prohibition Era MN on the Canadian border
In this quick read we follow ambitious teens, Owen and Sadie Rose, as they take confident steps into adulthood. As precarious as the winter ice of Rainy Lake, life in Koochiching County becomes difficult to navigate. Though not as deep as Rainy Lake, Casanova's easy prose breaks through the surface to explore Owen's icy heart and frozen dreams. Will he always feel as cold and lifeless as the bodies lost beneath the water? Will he surrender to the crushing call of spring ice floes? Will he find fortune or fatality in the bootlegging boom on the border?

She is also gaining impressive momentum as a writer of excellent historical fiction
Mary Casanova has delivered again! Many adult readers I know look forward to her books written for children or young adults. She writes so evocatively of this Up North land she knows and loves. She is also gaining impressive momentum as a writer of excellent historical fiction. I read a lot of it, and am never disappointed when I pick up one of her books set back in time.We came to know and care about Owen in FROZEN, and now in this new novel, his story unfolds for us, in a dramatic and believable manner. Casanova delivers in building the risk-ridden life Owen navigates as he grows into young adulthood, with many too many burdens for one so young. She writes with heart, and keen awareness and insight about issues a child of an alcoholic must come to terms with in order to make a better life for himself.I strongly recommend this book. I am already looking forward to what I hope is the next book in this series...there is more to learn about the characters who lived important and challenging lives in the rugged early 20th century Northland.
