Excellent concert from this very troubled performer
John Denver certainly had his demons including a drinking problem that dogged him from at least his early 30's to his death. This DVD arrived quickly and in perfect shape. Price was very low.I never got to see him in person but he was the very first concert my wife went to back in the mid 1970's. So I bought this mostly for her but I was also curious to see him in concert. He doesn't disappoint on this concert from Japan. He sang all of his hits (to that point in time anyway) and was in very good voice. His backing band was extremely good as well. The closest I ever got to a John Denver concert was seeing Jim Curry, who looks and sounds a lot like Denver did, perform with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra a year or so ago. BTW - if you get a chance you really should see Jim Curry - it was a very good show.Picture was VERY good as was the sound.I would recommend this DVD for Denver fans or anyone who like country-folk-rock. I would rate this a very good 8.75 to 9.25 our of 10 stars!

John and Renee Armand!
This concert was recently broadcast on PBS. As a John Denver fan (and what BabyBoomer isn't?) I certainly enjoyed it. In a lot of live performances it is easy to tellthat the artist is bored at having to perform his "classics" yet once again -- not sowith John Denver! He sings every song at this concert with love and joy, everythingis so fresh.I have most of the songs on this cd on other tapes and cds, so I didn't think aboutbuying it until the camera found Renee Armand. An absolutely gorgeous lady withan astonishing voice. She did "Fly Away" with John, and I was floored. WhenJohn introduced her, he said she had the voice of an angel - I certainly agree. So glad to havebelatedly discovered her. I only wish she would have been featured a bit more.Watching John perform on a Japanese style set was an unusual and nice touch.Amazon has this cd for about thirteen bucks. I ordered it with some books and chose the"super saver" free shipping option. Everything arrived, as usual, just a few days later. Can't beat theprice, can't beat the concert. Don't miss this one.

1981 - probably not his best year
I am a huge JD fan. It was painfully obvious to me that he was not all there. This is the guy who always smiled...but, IMHO he seems down, strained, and tired in this performance. A small amount of research (album notes and Wikipedia) revealed that his divorce/separation with Annie was in full swing/very freshly resolved at this point (divorce finalized in 1982). The intermittent grainy video and grainy concert screen were big distractions for me too. I'm sorry to the other posters, but I think the would agree if they watched and listened a little more carefully with these things in mind. Annie's Song is especially tough to watch (I have 5 other videos + live concert memories to compare to).

exceeded expectations
This DVD blew me away. I have every DVD I could ever get my hands on of JOhn denver...and most of the latest ones are poor qulaity rehashes of old stuff. THis has excellent quality for both sound and picture...and Its John at his very best...his voice is strong..the band with him isnt too over produced..... Sometimes concert videos are full of shots of the audience ( ugh that sony one comes to mind) and that is not what I want to see. I want to see the performers....Thats what this DVD gives. Its John and the band having fun...he forgets the words on "dancing with the mountains" and laughs thru it. Seeing Hal Blaine really brings back some memories. All of my expectations were exceeded 10 fold! One of the reasons I bought this was because I saw John on this tour ( not in Japan!), and this recording was just exciting and happy. Its a great samplling of his work. Any one who has this will enjoy it no matter if they are a long time loyal fan like me or just a casual JD listener.

Bare Bones Concert
John Denver is always going to be John Denver - a wonderful talent - but this concert was almost like an amateur high-school performance. He fumbled around with his guitars between songs, and sort of plodded along, but his performances were just as excellent as always - just without a lot of professionalism in his presentation.Maybe being in Japan, he hadn't brought along a lot of backup or crew?

Great DVD, John Denver Greatest Singer/Song Writer of our time
I Just received my DVD copy in the mail this week, I as well had seen this on PBS over the summer, was unaware it was on, & wished I could have seen the whole thing. Well they did play it again & I did see most of it, but it further made me wish for a copy of my own. So that brought me to Amazon.com, where I finally purchased a copy, and let me tell you I was 110% satisfied, The picture & sound quality is remastered & is at its up most quality for DVD format. I can not begin to explain how happy I am to own this piece of history, Recorded in 1981, I was only 1 year old at this time, and now almost 30 years later, it still stands the test of time!, John Denver is the Greatest and most missed singer/songwriter on this planet, This and all of his concerts will go down in history, keeping his memory alive for the ages!!

Great DVD for John Denver fans
This is an excellent DVD for those who enjoy John Denver's music. It is a collection of most of his hits, probably at the height of his career. Both the sound and video is high quality and his voice is wonderfully clear. Denver doesn't interact too much with the audience, mainly because of the language difference where the concert was held I assume, so it is mainly him and his band moving on with one song after another. But that doesn't detract from hearing Denver's wonderful voice and he is well-supported by his band and back-up singers. If you like John Denver, this DVD is highly recommended.
