The widest part of the cabinet is the top cover which is 12 1/2 inches wide. The cabinet itself is 11 1/2 inches.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Inside the top and bottom portions, so behind each door, is an adjustable shelf. There are little plastic pegs that the shelf rests on and they can be moved up or down to 3 different heights.

Can you leave off the back for full open shelves?

The top part is full open shelves. The bottom are drawers. The backing is required for the drawer area. Hope that was helpful.
