Nice addition to the horror movie collection.
It’s a decent movie! Has some good scares and shocking moments. It’s one that not many have seen so when guests are over they enjoy seeing it. Not bad, pretty scary and it’s full of twists and turns.

More "The Grudge" than "The Ring"
I would watch this movie just to see Joshua Jackson. It is a horror movie, but not really a scary one. Some of the characters have reason to be afraid, but the viewer doesn't find out exactly why until the end. That is why it is worth watching all the way to the end instead of giving up on it halfway. I like watching horror movies based on Asian originals (I prefer watching the originals when available) because of the cultural differences. What a Japanese or Thai audience finds frightening is different from the usual American horror tropes and feels more original. Of course, American movie companies remake them and add sequels until they have removed all the originality. That's why it's best to watch the original. But since this movie had a Japanese director, it was better overall than most of the American remakes.

One of the better Japanese cooperative efforts
First off, unless I'm mistaken, this is a remake of a movie from Thailand -- so I was a bit surprised when it ended up becoming a sort of Japanese-Hollywood hybrid.Of course, the whole concept fits very well with the Grudge-like Japanese genre, and the Thai version was likely also inspired by that sub-genre of horror, so in the end that's beside the point. I just felt the need to question whether this is "just another J-Horror crossover".Anyway, having lived in Japan for nearly a decade, I found this one hit very close to home and was authentic and believeable.Compare to a show like Heroes that uses Japanese-Americans and Korean-Americans pretending to be Japanese with awful accents - or reading clocks with Kanji digits... well, let's just say it was nice to see some real Japanese actors who weren't playing to American stereotypes.See, I knew more than a couple of American guys who dated Japanese women, and stories of the Japanese girlfriend who refused to say goodbye -- often bordering on the creepy stalkerish type -- were not rare.Something about being a Gaijin and the way Japanese relationships are rarely as casual at their core makes the girlfriend who could not say goodbye story ring very true here.I also knew a few less than wholesome American guys there with awful reputations, and the "ugly American" in this movie likewise hits the nail on the head. These realistic, drawn-from-tales-of-experience background story elements make Shutter more than the typical watch the teens die one by one type of B flick, and made it very entertaining for me. I also found it to be more realistic than the Grudge remake because of their less than pretty take of the American guy in Japan. If you are a guy (or girl) who lived in Japan for a while, you'll enjoy the authentic feel of this one. If not, it may just be "another J-horror crossover" to you. It's a buy for me!

Fun to Watch
My husband and I watched this yesterday, it really is a fly-under-the-radar gem.Two newlyweds head to Japan for the husband's job, and they accidently run over a woman on the road but they can't find her anywhere after the accident. Then the husband (a photographer) and the wife (a tourist) both end up with blurry spots and figures on their photos, and they believe they're being haunted.

Camera at the Ready
Shutter is an English Language version of the Thai original that is as nuanced as it is diverse. In an attempt to bring some films to English Cinema, the concepts are transposed entirely, sometimes in part. The Camera of a New York native photographer who is now working in Japan starts to capture the image of the "ghost". The wife is the prime vehicle for seeing the ghosts, and as stated in many of the DVD features ( Commentary etc) the Wife is the way the audience is supposed to see the events and experience the Japanese culture. As I have stated in other reviews, the unrated version has again proven itself to be the de-facto gold standard, since this is a gem of a scare, which supposedly differs from the cinematic piece. It is really not clear if this is the case, and it is just a subjective judgement, but the film seems to suffer to some degree from a non-english speaking Director, especially in the dialogue scenes, but it is clear from the Features that he brings a wealth of spooky experience to the non-verbal material, and it is why this material stands out so very well. It is to this end that the latter part of the film ( past 45 minutes) starts to pick up speed from non-verbal material and where the Director has taken some scenes from the original.THE DVD:Great Commentary. Works superbly well... not exactly entertaining, but it is extremely informative. The features are genuinely good, and at points intensely spooky. Its not the Ring, but its extremely good.

LIKE A HALLMARK LIFETIME HORROR MOVIE
This is a well-done horrible movie.I don't know why Japanese people are so terrified of sullen young women staring at them. And God forbid they have extra long bangs.Give me a Takashi Miike movie anytime.Or a Jackie Chan demon-hunter movie. At least some incels get their comeuppance.

love this film
love this film, very creepy and the special features are very interesting, although I don't agree with faking ghost photos, it's interesting to see how it can be done.

Good version of a World Cinema title
Bought this as I couldn't get hold of its original counterpart. I thought it would be a very watered down version, but surprisingly enough, although not as scary, it turned out to be a good all-round thriller, so was pleased with my purchase..
