The Animal Desk Reference: Essential Oils for Animals Paperback – April 15, 2012

I have the hard copy of the ADR and love the content! It is extremely helpful. I was excited to see it come in digital version. However, I am extremely disappointed in the formatting and therefore only the 3 star. You can go directly to the animal species ie Canine, but then it is necessary to page through every illness to find the one you are after - this is very cumbersome. There needs to be at least a link to each alphabet letter.I am using this with the Kindle app on my computer and don't know if this is the problem or not. At this point I feel like I wasted $60.00 and will continue to take the hard cover when I travel with my dogs.I do not have a Kindle and do not plan on purchasing one just for this book. I am already invested heavily in Nook books.UPDATE: I was a bit hasty in this review and should have contacted the author first. It was user lack of knowledge in using the Kindle app on my computer. There is a search area on the left side which does a great job of getting you the section of the book where it is mentioned ie cancer - numerous references for this illness.I am now totally satisfied and would highly recommend this book to those who are looking for a natural approach to your animals health.

I've spent thousands of dollars in vet bills dealing with tough health issues for horses, dogs and cats this year alone. Late this summer I met Cherie Ross who is an amazing wealth of knowledge when it comes to addressing the layers of healing and getting to the root of the problems for people and animals. Through this connection with Cherie I found Melissa's book. I purchased the ebook which I can read through the kindle software on my MacBook Pro as well as my ipad. The search feature is fabulous and within seconds I can find information to many issues for any type animal!Melissa Shelton gained her wealth of knowledge from Cherie as well. Melissa states in her 'acknowledgements' section that without Cherie Ross (and her entire organization) who shared her vast knowledge and experience, Melissa would never have learned what she needed to know to start utilizing oils medically. Melissa has obviously gone above and beyond what was available and put together an abundance of healing information for animals- this will save lives! I am so grateful to Melissa for doing the research and taking the effort to put together this necessary resource book. I have a houseful of amazing books and her ebook has become the book I refer to all day long. Thank you so much, Melissa!

Everything I was looking for and more!!! Some complain about it being too Young Living Focused, however all essential oil companies are not created equal, as the FDA regulates it like it's a perfume, so a cheap oil from another company could have anything in it with very little essential oil in it. (Even if it claims 100% pure essential oil) And I couldn't vouch for those other companies either, so who knows if you would be doing more harm than good with another company and your animal. I've had great success with my animals with the book, great structure and very informative. Covers a variety of animals with extensive coverage on cats and dogs.

This is similar to a PDR (Physician's Desk Reference). But, this one is for ALL kinds of animals. It's how to use Essential Oils for holistic, natural healing and prevention. It's a hearty book. I don't think anyone is going to read it from from to back. It is easy to find the information you are looking for by the way it's divided into sections. I needed it so that I could make sure the Young Living Essential Oils I was using were going to be safe in the same house as my birds. Not only did I find that out; but, I also found out there are all kinds of uses for the oils in the care of birds. The info is pet specific, as the oils are used differently depending on the animal. Surprisingly, you have to be especially careful when treating cats. It's amazing how many illnesses can be treated with Essential Oils.

I appreciated the individual breakdown of the oils and their properties. I found it very useful to know what compounds are in each oil and what ailments they are effective for. She also includes warnings about other effects of some oils and cautionary notes due to the purity and undiluted strength of some of these oils. The later chapters deal with individual ailments by species which I found a little tedious but it is a medical reference book. Overall, I found the book very helpful.

I hate trial and error with myself; even more so with someone I love. As a new oiler with Young Living oils I felt a little alone trying to figure out the needs for my dog. Most doctors will only deal with pharmaceuticals and I was determined to go a more natural route. Dr. Shelton's book was just what I needed.She covers a great range of issues including the emotional side. That was one aspect of care I had never thought of for my 7 year old German Shepherd. With all her other issues I was very focused on her outward health.I wish this book gave more details on things like tick prevention vs. tick borne diseases. I also wish she had some more detailed guidelines for some of the conditions mentioned.I love when she has a "First Line" recommendation. This helps me to determine the first choice for which oil to order first. I don't mind having lots of oils on hand since they are so versatile for people but I do not want to have a lot with no purpose for her.Because of this book I can use YL oils with confidence on her. I even had a Vet research the oils and afterward she told me, "I have never seen such a clean oil. We can use them on your dog." I was so thrilled by this because she has her own oils that she uses and recommends.Dr. Shelton covers so much more than dogs but that happens to be the only pet I have. From birds, horses and rabbits to cattle she covers more than I expected.

This reference guide is Gold! Spent hours on the internet trying to find the information and the author is a vet and has it all in the book!

Excellent book, with many proven and safe methods for treating pets holistically with essential oils. Easy to read and understand. I Have already tried some of the suggestions and they work perfectly. My pets are more happy and naturally healthier than ever. Thankyou Mellisa Shelton for sharing this heart centred work with humanity.

Perhaps my expectations were too high. I have been using essential oils for a long time with humans and animals, so I was expecting more in-depth information than I have found under the headings I have checked so far. Perhaps my opinion will change with further use.

If you have Pats and you use essential oils on them , then it is a must have.
