Jean De Florette

A tone-perfect picture of xenophobia in Southern France
I lived in Southern France for a year, and while I was not affected by the deep suspicion and resentment of foreigners there (I did not own property), I had a close British friend who was driven out because she had bought a house near Sigoules. She was a retired teacher, lived alone, and her neighbors terrorized her for two years. They hung her cat by the rafters in her barn. They shot guns off on her balcony in the middle of the night. They clipped all the blossoms off her flowering garden. They poured bleach on her vegetable patch. All this happened about a year after this movie was made. I remember my friends daughter telling her mother to move because she had just seen this film. In this movie, the man who is terrorized by his neighbors, who finally dies, is merely a Parisian, not even a foreigner! But to the local farmers, he is a threat from the big city. I can't wait to see the sequel in which his daughter takes revenge, "Manon of the Springs," which for some reason, is not available to rent on Amazon. Why make the first part of the sequel available, and not the second?

Unforgettable Drama
Jean De Florette and its sequel, Manon Des Sources, are my favorite French films and high on my list of all favorites.Jean De Florette stands well on its own as a drama about idealistic dreams vs. insular self-interest. The plot revolves around a city man who inherits a rundown farm in the french countryside who moves there with his wife and young daughter to pursue the dream of an idealized country life. He comes into contact with the two remaining family members of an old local faming family who have their sights set on owning the same farm, and the drama unfolds from there. When combined with its sequel, Manon Des Sources, the dramatic story of Jean De Florette attains Shakespearean proportions and delivers a moving story you will never forget.Fine performances are delivered by the entire cast.

A Great French Classique by Marcel Pignol
I saw this movie a long time ago. I viewed it again with wife in Prime Video as a part of our review of some movies with Provence theme before our trip there soon.. We both enjoyed it greatly. Like many Marcel Pignol's works, a French classic, it is enjoyed and loved by all French. If you speak some French, it is easy to understand the dialog although there is some Provencial accent in them. Too bad its sequel, Manon des Sources, is not available for view at the moment.<addendum>Although Manon des Sources is not available for rental streaming, I could buy a Bluray box (2 disks) containing both films for only $15 at Amazon. I highly recommend to buy this Bluray. Both are filmed in Provence near Vaugines, about 10 minutes east of the famous market town Lourmarin. Vaugines made news a few months ago as the last secret residence of Peter Mayles of the "A Year in Provence" fame. He was so hounded by fans, journalists and other strangers at his first house near Menerbes, he moved away to the US. Some years later, upon returning to Provence, his village of residence was kept a real secret. It was only after his death in early 2018, the words seeped out that his secret mansion was between Vaugines and Lourmarin.

Beware! Sequel unavailable or extremely hard to find
This movie is part 1 of 2 movies. It doesn't make sense to only watch this one. The sequel is called Manon des Sources, but is extremely hard to find. Amazon Prime Video has it as unavailable to stream, Google Play doesn't have it. Only option is to buy and old DVD from Amazon for >$20. It's totally worth the money, but get the second movie first, before watching this one.

This movie will keep your interest
This is the first of a two-movie set. The second film is Manon des Sources (Manon of the Spring). I watched this as part of a French language class (fortunately with subtitles!). The story is of a gentleman that tries to grow flowers and crops in a valley. Others did not want what they perceived as a different-class individual in their midst, and they dammed up the flow of water, effectively putting him out of business and leading to his demise. Film two is his daughter, Manon's response to these less-than-friendly neighbors. The acting is well done, the scenery beautiful, and by the end, the viewer feels vindicated.

A wonderful film from the novel by Marcel Pagnol
A wonderful film from the novel by Marcel Pagnol; but alas, it is only part 1!. At the end of the film there is a notification that it is the end of part 1. So that suggeststhere should be part 2. But, this next film is not to be found on Amazon Prime. I checked out the titles "Manon of the Spring," which would bethe logical choice for part 2, but this is not available on Amazon. If there is a different title that I should be searching for I wish someonewould suggest it to me. At the end of this film, the young daughter, Manon, witnesses the 2 evil neighbors unplugging the spring on the property. The knowledge of this spring was kept hidden from her parents by the 2 neighbors; and this spring could have saved her father's life and also the family if they had known about it.

A fantastic French sub-titled film - must be seen with the second film "Manon de la Source".
A fantastic French sub-titled film - must be seen with the second film "Manon de la Source" - watch them back-to-back if you can. A story of French peasants, miss-understanding, love and death, with great music (Verdi) set in sunny rural Southern France... what more could you want!Taken from a classic French novel, with four of the greatest French actors. A film that has haunted me since I first saw it many years ago.

Excellent service and value.
I only paid £1.92 for a copy of Jean de Florette. It arrived promptly and well packaged. I thought it was faulty at first and asked for a replacement. One was sent with a pre paid envelope to return the 'faulty' one but I later realised it had been a fault on our dvd player rather than a fault with the dvd. After a bit of a mix up, Westcott issued a refund for the replacement I had sent back. They told me to just keep it.The film is very good. I don't know if it's true to the book because I haven't read it yet. Good listening practice for my French class and exceptional value for money.

Before they were famous.
Great to watch this classic again. What performances. I'd found the second part (Manon) lying around somewhere so got this. It's brilliant.
