I liked the book. - Possible small spoilers - Overall it was a good story and the whole state capture side was interesting. I agree with another reviewer that Bennie's fear about asking Alexa to marry him was a little over done. Loved the whole international (French) side of the story. Better than expected.

In Prooi Deon Meyer adds a refreshing and well researched international touch, Vaughan Cupido’s character is developed to Bennie’s equal and using “state capture” as a backdrop makes this a topical and an important novel. The development of the various storylines are well balanced and the tension is maintained through out. The crescendo at the South African embassy in Paris screamed Hollywood.The detail of the French and Amsterdam storyline compelled me to use google earth to travel with.

Typical Deon Meyer - great fun, with an intriguing plot and loads of shenanigans. However, his characterisation remains poor, with his protagonist's wavering about getting marriage not all that plausible. But we read Meyer for the action - and it works.

This ebook version is very expensive given the South African exchange rate. Also a pity the Afrikaans review is not acceptable. BUT it is worth the effort and cost. It is an excellent tense novel around the actualities of South African politics. State capture's many dimensions are transformed brilliantly in Prooi and one constantly wonders where the distinction is between fiction and facts.Deon Meyer is an Afrikaans word master. Another long wait for the next Bennie Griessel novel .

Deon Meyer certainly has a flair for storytelling and, in that sense, Prooi definitely delivers. It is an enjoyable and suspenseful read right up to about the next-to-last chapter or even a bit further. Unfortunately the ending is - in my opinion, ymmv - rather lame.I also think that Bennie Griessel and his insecurities have reached their sell-by date. Next time, maybe Vaughn Cupido or Lemmer could be the focus. Mat Joubert could make a comeback? Or perhaps the world of Koors can deliver a few new characters and conspiracies? Just a thought. Use it, don't use it.

Deon Meyer has the canny ability to jump effortlessly between various story lines while keeping you intrigued. He interweaves the personalities and builds the anticipation......at some point it all just comes together effortlessly.This story hits close to every South African’s heart and is very topical. We are still paying the price......An amazing book and well worth the read. I am anxiously awaiting the next one.

I liked everything about this book. The fact that Deon Meyer can tell a great story from 2 very different sides of the world and make it all come together seamlessly for the reader is a sign of growth for the author and also for the reader who pesists till the end of the book. Deon Meyer’s books are always a pleasure to read.

A story that kept the pages turning. Read this during the Covid-19 lockdown in the U.K. and been a great distraction. Adore the Afrikaans - somehow the words have deeper meaning and hope Deon Meyer will keep writing in this “pragtige taal”!

Afrikaans is my second language so reading this book was more challenging than in English. But it is so well-written and fast moving that I could not put it down. The Afrikaans gives it authenticity. It takes the reader between South Africa and France and it has a contemporary feel. It’s main characters are familiar if you’ve read previous Deon Meyer books.
