Almost works with newer Sony camcorders...
I bought this lens to use with a Sony HDR-XR520V camcorder, and found it to be just a tad too small. When in video mode, the active steady-shot causes black spots to appear at the corners of the screen. In order to get rid of this problem, you have to partially zoom the camera lens, (maybe 10%?) which kind-of defeats the purpose of using a wide-angle. Plus it's problematic when zooming back out. If you go too far, you risk seeing the black spots again. I should note however, if you're using the camera in a stationary manner or panning VERY slowly, then this lens works fine in video mode. Photo mode is not as forgiving. You have to zoom in order to get rid of black at the corners of the picture. On the plus side, the optical quality seems pretty good compared to some cheaper lenses, (Cokin lenses are made in France) which is why this lens costs about $65 at B&H Photo & Video. You can probably get a used one for around $25 with shipping.I like how small this lens is. The Sony VCL-HGXXXX series lenses are HUGE and only available in a 0.7X format, but apparently huge is necessary to compensate for the active steady-shot. I'm going to keep this lens for stationary shooting as it covers a nice wide area, but I'm going to try and find a good used HG series lens for when I'm moving around.Hope this helps you make your decision!
