The Siberian Incident

Stay away from Siberia... ;-)
This was an excellent stand alone mystery/horror/action book by Greig Beck. All new characters along with a pretty awesome story based on a object that crash landed many thousands of years ago and what came with that object. There are a few small stories from earlier periods that help set the reader up for the main story (set in the present). Telling anything else would be a spoiler for anyone what hasn't read the book. All I will say that if you like this author's work or other author's like Jeremy Robinson or James Rollins, I think you will like this book a lot. It was a very good and fast paced read!Happy reading!

The Thing meets Eastern Promises
What a great, well written and thought out book! I had no clue there was going to be a military and mafia aspect to this and that could be why I’m giving it such praise, it caught me by surprise! The author does a good job of keeping the underlying menace present and accounted for as he introduces aspects to the story I wouldn’t have seen work. I’m beyond impressed with how seemingly easy and workable this overall story was put together and will definitely check out the authors other work now.I’d describe it as action horror, definitely had a The Thing movie vibe going on which was great, but image people with more guns and the mafia. Eastern Promises meets The Thing, great fun!

What crashed in Lake Baikal? Another great book by Greig Beck.
I'm a huge Greig Beck fan. This man can write action like no other, and his grasp of science and history makes for a consistently awesome blend of ideas and source material. Some will say that the Siberian Incident has its roots in 'The Thing' ... thinking the 1982 Kurt Russell flick, not the original 1951 Ken Tobey movie. And it's easy to see some reference to that flick, but for me this is more a mix of Green Arrow meets X-Files meets the real-life 1908 Tunguska event. This is the first book that Beck has written in a while that wasn't based on one of his earlier works, and the new characters are a breath of fresh (yet frigid) air. It was good to develop new relationships with this new crop of heroes.I'm not going to provide any story beats or spoilers. The sample or book description, plus my unabashed fandom of Beck should be all that's needed to plunk your hard earned money for this worthwhile and highly enjoyable read.

Not the worst thing ever, not the greatest...
The book can be summed up pretty quickly as: Some guy and his wife get a cushy deal from the Russian government to breed endangered sturgeon in Lake Baikal, but everything goes awry when the Russian Mafia tries to muscle in on him...all while alien creatures living at the bottom of the lake (and, without giving too much away, are of the "infect humans and other earthlings" type) prepare for their invasion of our planet after 100,00 years! It's up to the guy's ex-special forces brother to save the day and protect both the wife and the human race!Eh, I can't say much more than that, 'cause honestly, that's what you get. On the plus side, the story takes an appropriately long time (not too quick, not too slow) to establish a sense of horror and get moving, and the action scenes are pretty good. On the other hand, the characters are all pretty much cardboard and as other reviewers have pointed out, the motives of the aliens themselves are taken straight from Independence Day. So I don't think it was terrible, but IMO not worth 4.99 American dollars. I think 3.99 would have been more appropriate. Still, I enjoyed reading it in an afternoon so I can't say it was all bad. Ah, well...3 stars it is.

Great B-Movie Icky Bug - A Master At His Craft
I’ve become quite a fan of Greig Beck and once again, The Siberian Incident delivered. The writing was outstanding with solid third-person limited and past-tense. The narrative was brisk and never bogged down in rambling prose that could stop the story movement. The story moved fast with relatively short chapters and scenes, which made for an easy read. The heroes try to start a sturgeon (caviar) fish farm on Lake Baikal in Siberia. Of course, things go wrong and mayhem ensues. There are plenty of complications along the way and a great icky bug as well. I had a great time and enjoyed every page. The payoff was also what made the story so great. This is B-movie icky bug at its best, and Mr. Beck is a master at the craft. Highly recommended.

An Exciting Sci-Fi/Horror/Action Adventure Story
This is another straight-up Horror/Sci-Fi + Crime/Military action thriller. Loaded with action and horror elements. A good basic structure, placed in a location few readers are familiar with. The overall plot line was good, and the science and logic were mostly believable. The characters were a little bit stereotypical, and a lot of the dialogue was very cliched. But this type of book isn't really about character development or human relations. The strength here is the action and science fiction, and it's well above average for this genre.

Fantastic engaging read
I'm a voracious readers, and having read many books, I find that many self contained one-shot (AKA not part of a series) books are forgettable after you finish them, sometimes even while you're reading them. Not this one. To the point that this is the first "one shot" book I have left a review for. It's got a surprise twist you're not expecting a good portion of the way into the book (not giving more details due to fear of spoilers.) I'm not a scientist, but from an average citizen standpoint, the scientific aspects of the book are well written. More importantly, even with the twist in the book, it's still engaging, and only gets more so the more you get in to the book. first book in a long time that left me with goosebumps at the end of it and wanting more. Well done.

Interesting and Engaging
A well thought out book. The story is engaging and the characters are likable. There's a lot of strangeness going on, generated by an author with a good imagination.

Nice weekend read
I love reading Greig Beck books. The build up to the climax is always thoroughly entertaining. Good story. Enjoyed it.

As thrilling and sickeningly terrifying as ever!
The Siberian Incident is a fantastic new addition to an already impressive roster of Terror-Thrillers by Beck, and possibly his most unnerving work yet! Did not put the book down from cover to cover, at the cost of a few hours sleep. (Both from engrossed reading and from scrutinizing every sound my creaky flat makes at night with nervous trepidation, thanks Greig!)
