The Tower of Nero-Trials of Apollo, The Book Five

Stunningly Perfect
**No spoilers were harmed in themaking of this review**"To be human is to move forward, to adapt, to believe in your ability to make things better. That is the only way to make the pain and sacrifice mean something."Hey guys...I just finished The Tower of Nero (The Trials of Apollo, #5) by Rick Riordan. it is the last official book in he percy jackson series, the greek and roman. I believe there will be no more 3 or 5 book series with these guys. But perhaps a novella? I did...I did not expect to be so sad! Well actually I did not quite know how I expected to feel. But I did not expect to ball my eyes out when I read the ending. Gods...it was such a beautiful ending. Honestly I cannot think of any other way it could of ended. Well I probably could have, but it would have risked the integrity of the story. I think Riordan did a fabulous job of what he had created and what he had to work with. I think there definitiely could be novellas to follow particular characters, and there were a few things within this book that made me question particular stories Riordan could craft at a later date. But...all good things have to end. And sometimes they truly do need an ending. Our favorite characters have suffered so much and for so long...they finally deserve some peace. Well, as much peace offered to them within their demigod and monster filled world. Okay, im kinda getting meta, so back to the story at hand, at first I was slightly confused in the beginning how things were progressing. To be honest...I was slightly detatched reading this novel, but I think that was just me and my mindset, and it had nothing to do with the story. (but it does make me wonder if its time for me to grow on and end this chapter of my life as well, who knows). But I did enjoy the new character that Riordan introduced us to, Lu, a Celtic warrior. It makes me wonder if he is going to dive into Celtic mythology next. I really found her character intriguing and her dynmaic with Meg and Apollo. Meg....oh meg....our precious meg was just a frightened and unsure sapling when we first met her. ANd now...**Sniffles** She is a beautifully grown tree. SHe is strong and fierce and passionate and fiery and brave. SHe is so brave. SHe truly defeated the Beast and she is a queen in her own way. There were some other familiar faces within this book, like WIll and Nico. Gods I love them so much. Nico is my poor tortured soul and WIll is my ray of sunshine. THey are just the cutest. I really enjoyed the way they fit into the storyline and realllllly hope there is a novella about them. Of course at the end of the book it showed all other characters we have met over the percy jackson universe and it was...beautiful. Percy <3. MY love, my first bookfriend, how far you have come. You went from vaporizing your pre algebra teacher to...**Sniffles** gods, my seaweed brain. You will forever live on in my heart. And Wise GIrl. Gods...and the praetors, and reyna and....GODS. EVERYONE. I loved everyone and everything in this book, which included the classic Riordan humor and amazing crafting of myths and story and this book held heart and wisdom and sacrifice and action and bravery and courage...and it was all narrated by Apollo. Gods...Apollo. When we first met him he was a a selfish self serving arrogant god who had only one goal in mind, to become a god again, no matter what he had to do or who had to use to get his way. **cries** he has come so far...so far. He has gone through pain, and trauma, and sacrifce, and was truly...human. He truly realized the error of his ways and he opened his mind to new ways of thinking and to be humble, and cherishing and willing to put his friends first, and not himself. He was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his friends. NOw that is a hero. He was willing to right all his wrongs. I have never seen such a transformative character development as much as Apollo's. It was truly an honor to join him on his journey. And maybe we will see him and the others once again? After all, the sun always comes back. OKay...I think that is enough rambling, and I doubt this was very helpful but those were just my thoughts and feelings, and if you want your own opinion, read the series. Till next time. Bye.

All hail the troglodytes, oh, and Apollo
It’s fitting that this series about demigods ends with the story about a semi-god. Apollo’s character is rich, peculiar, amusing and sincere. His story also fills the unpleasant gap in these series about the uncaring godly parents to all the demigods. It also soothes some of the tragedy of earlier books for Meg and Jason in particular.Rick Riordan’s books are always good. Well written, funny, creative and entertaining; this is just as good. But even then, the troglodytes surprise. When the trogs appear, so too appears the best of the author’s talent and Apollo’s character. The world is as well developed as ever, avoiding stereotypes. The Tower of Nero is pretty awesome.I know this review is redundant. As if any fan of Riordan and his brilliant demigods series wouldn’t read this final book. But just in case you are having doubts, this conclusion doesn’t disappoint. I’m so glad Riordan doesn’t lose his puff by the end as so many good authors do with a long running series.I only waited so long to read this because of the cost that I usually avoid for paperless kindle books. This kindle book is the same price as for paper without the book smell, feel, bookshelf display joy or easy ability to loan; more’s the pity.So this review is late and consequently even more redundant when no-one will see it, buried behind the thousands. I still feel the need to heap praise, all the same. These Riordan series are rare in that they somehow appeal to any age above and probably many below 10. I wish more adult books were written with such flair, creativity and humour.Without seeking to ape others and using its own inspiration from ADHD and mythology, this series is America’s Harry Potter. Even Terry Pratchett fans would not be displeased. It’s sad to see this end.Another five stars for a highly recommended action fantasy series and its triumphant, if bitter-sweet, conclusion.

I credit Riordan's writing with engendering my son's love of reading
Having recently read Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series, I decided to tackle his Trials of Apollo series (which includes The Hidden Oracle, The Dark Prophecy, The Burning Maze, The Tyrant’s Tomb, and The Tower of Nero) and found it just as enjoyable.Zeus blames Apollo for the happenings that occur previously in the Heroes of Olympus series and, to punish his son, drops him literally into a garbage dumpster in New York City—sans his immortality and godly powers—with a junior driver’s license proclaiming him to be Lester Papadopoulos. He’s got to survive as a flabby, sixteen-year-old boy with pimples until he can convince his dad to allow Apollo to return to Olympus. A mortal Apollo has plenty of enemies who’d like to see him dead, including former friends, enemies, and lovers such as Caligula, Nero, and Commodus as well as his ancient enemy, Python. He teams up with Meg, a daughter of Demeter and step-daughter of Nero, who claims Apollo as his slave. As always, Riordan is witty, often laugh-out-loud funny as he blends pop culture (Apollo apparently knew and influenced everyone from jazz musicians to rock-and-rollers) with twists on Greek and Roman mythology. He also does a bang-up job giving Apollo, who starts out as a typical arrogant, egotistical god with a superiority complex, a delightful character arc as he becomes more human, more tolerant, more caring. The book is a rousing, rollicking adventure with a great message for youngsters. I have previously credited Riordan’s writing for triggering my son’s love of reading, and that certainly would apply to this series—except that he’s now an adult reading Star Wars books ad nauseum.

Great end!
It's Rick Riordan, so I excepted to love it, and I certainly have loved the rest of the books in the series. It was everything I hoped from it and I'm sad to see the series end, but excited to see what Rick will do next!
