Story of Survival
Snowbound centers around the story of two isolated teens, Cindy Reichert and Tony Laporte, who happen to find each other and become stuck in the snow after a storm hits. Tony is a spoiled kid who is a little conceited and feels as though he should have things his way. Cindy is a little self-concious about her self worth, and does not seem to understand the right way to feel better about who she is. When Tony gets upset with his parents for not letting him keep a dog that he found, he decides to skip school and "steal" the family car to look for the dog. Along the way, he picks up Cindy, who is hitchhiking because her bus is late. From there the clashing of their personalities becomes apparent, and eventually, after they get stuck, they have to learn how to get along to survive in the snow.Although a bit simplistic, the major essense of Mazer's work is to show how important cooperation is to the element of survival. Will Tony and Cindy use each other's skills to get out of their delimma? Or will they just fight?Another significant asepct of the book is the issue of self identity and change. Cindy and Tony must figure out their own strengths and personal weaknesses and come to another realization about themselves.

A Dated Simplistic Youth Book
Snow Bound was written in 1973 about a teenage boy and girl who are stranded in the snow in New York.I decided to read this short youth book as a diversion from the typical books that I've been reading in 2010. I was surprised at how dated this book was, even though 37 years ago doesn't sound like that much to me.The gist of the story was that a teenaged boy was driving a car in the winter and picked up a hitch hiker, who happened to be a teenage girl. They were caught in a blizzard in New York and then became stranded out in the country for two weeks. They tried to get back to civilization while suffering tremendously in the snow, wet, and cold.Every now and then I will read a youth book because they are also fun for adults. This one was not only written for young people, but also sounded like the author was inexperienced in writing. It reminded me of a person who was/is successul in his own career and decided that "now that I'm successul, I guess I will just go ahead and whip off a children's book, type person 'cause I'm so successful".Well, he was successful. To give Mazer credit, I will say that I have read several 'stuck in the snow' type books and they tend to tell it like it is. That is, boring, cold, fruitless, and tedious. After days, weeks, or months of suffering, the characters survive. The reader of such books suffers page after page and survives when reading the last page of the book! Mazer succeeds in this regard.

I enjoyed it because I am from the Tug Hill area
I had read this when I was a teenager in middle school, I enjoyed it because I am from the Tug Hill area, so wanted to read it again. It was nice to read it as an older person,

Good Book for a book report.
My son, who is 17, had to do a book report. Being one that does not like to read, he wanted something interesting, but not to long. He said this was a book that kept his attention, but wasn't to long. He would definitely recommend it to any other student that doesn't like reading but has an upcoming book report due.
