Covers everything I could think of
Having started several groups in the past, though never non-profit organizations, and having been a member of several activist groups, I was excited to read a guide to starting and managing non-profit organizations. Frankly, I was not disappointed. Nonprofit Management is a very meticulous, thorough and clear guide to managing a non-profit organization. Without wasting any time, Nonprofit Management dives into the nitty-gritty details of running a non-profit organization. After giving some essential details on what a non-profit organization is, the author proceeded to give step-by-step details. If this guide were any more actionable, I'd think I was reading a cookbook. This book covers how to set up a non-profit board, how to elect members to the board and what you should expect from these members. The guide gives you the essential legal information that you must know including how you can get free legal consultation for your organization. The infrastructure section not only gave you important information on topics such as branding, but also gave you a sense of how others might view your non-profit organization. The "Getting Your Message Out" chapter is one that especially must be read, since spreading information is often the central goal of non-profit organizations. Based on the little bit of marketing I've done for my own website, I agree that any group can benefit from learning as much about marketing as possible. This marketing includes not only raising awareness but also doing research into what is actually needed in the world outside your non-profit organization. The marketing section also hammered home the message that seems to be repeated throughout the book: "know your audience."Nonprofit Management is sprinkled in case studies and anecdotes from seasoned non-profit starters, giving this guide more credibility. Another thing to say about Nonprofit Management was that it was very comprehensive. Just take a look at the sprawling table of contents to get an idea of how packed with information this guide is. Far too many books feel like a gloss over of a particular subject, which leaves you worried afterwards that you will have to read another book to get the information you need. Nonprofit Management, however, can very easily serve as your only playbook when running your non-profit organization.
