Bo's Best
The title of this compilation is misleading, I'd say. It suggests you're going to get a chronological selection of all Bo's singles on Checker, but actually it's a miscellaneous collection of his single sides and some others that to my knowledge only appeared on LP. (The discography is pathetic: it doesn't even list the catalog numbers. The brief liner notes are also not very informative, at least not about the music.)The sound is okay, but it could be better.Bo's greatest sides are included: MONA, WHO DO YOU LOVE, I'M A MAN, and, of course, BO DIDDLEY, the first release that introduced the world to the "Bo Diddley" beat. (The original audition version of this side was called DIRTY M-----F-----: too bad Bo didn't turn up on the recording scene 50 years later--no, I'm kidding, he'd probably be--horrible to contemplate--a rapper!)The three "signifying" sides are included, and even though the first (SAY, MAN) is far better than the follow-ups, it's fun to hear them all again. The same is true for COPS AND ROBBERS, a side that still makes me laugh out loud. There are other Bo Diddley compilations that I'm guessing are in better sound, but this is a bargain and probably enough Bo Diddley for the average blues-rock fan. Bo completists should look elsewhere, however.

A CONCISE COLLECTION OF DIDDLEY'S 50'S/60'S SINGLES FOR THE CHECKER LABEL
If you're looking for an inexpensive collection of some of Bo Diddley's best music, this is the one to get. In a nutshell--this set has 40 tunes from Diddley's prime era of the mid 50's into the early 60's, all recorded for Chess Records' Checker label. If all you want to hear is his more popular songs (most tracks are from the 50's) this set will do the job nicely. Also included are four "bonus" tracks--"Sixteen Tons", "Diddling", "Cadillac", and "Whoa Mule (Shine)".Like similar sets from the Not Now Music label, the sound is pretty good/good overall. And as usual there's only a short essay on Diddley and his music. But if you want to know more the information can easily be found elsewhere. This is some prime early r'n'r from one of the true originals, and at this low price it's hard to beat. This is yet another good example of Europe's soon to change (in 2014) copyright laws, which when changed, will keep music from this period (about 50 years) in copyright--thus more expensive.

Knowing Diddley
Not for all tastes, but one cannot be a lover of rock without paying homage to 'THE BO DIDDLEY BEAT'. Didn't get as much airplay as contemporaries like Chuck Berry, but his overall accomplishments cannot be overlooked.
