How the West was Spun? Treasures found.
I bought this as it is one of the updated volumes in the Lost Treasures format. How interesting that Beau L'Amour's postscript and notes includes a lengthy recounting of Louis' travails with the movie industry. Guys who "like to throw their weight around" because they can get away with it is nothing new. That Weinstein fellow is just treading in tracks that have long been in the making. High time for that trail to come to an end.It is endearing to know that Louis fought the battle for authenticity. His reader is being immersed in a credible world based on reality. That wind blowing through my hair is the real deal, not the breeze of some studio fan. I find myself part of the story, not removed from it, thanks to attention to detail. Thanks LL. Thanks Beau.

Classic revisited is just a great as the first time.
Revisiting this classic western so many years after the first reading was a cool experience. My dad was a huge fan of Louis Lamour and had a large collection of his books. As a young girl I would take one down and disappear into it for a few days. I am re-reading many of those books now and find them just as interesting and easy to get lost in. The author makes you feel like you can taste the dust, feel the sun beating down, and see all the obstacles in your path. I wish I had been able to rescue all of my dad's Lamour books.

Enjoyable
I know Louis L'amour is the premier name in westerns but this is a genre i usually don't read, although i am an avid reader. being familiar with this title from the movie i decided to give it a try. it was easy to read and kept my interest. it had a sweeping view of several generations of one family as they are drawn westward. it is lacking in character development, but has enough that you are familiar with and understand each character. there are lots of minor characters that are drawn into the plot as the family moves west. lots of action and some adventures as the sweep of history develops. not a page turner, but an enjoyable few hours reading.

Book written from the movie
This is a change; book written from the movie rather a movie made from a book! I did enjoy reading the book. A book always brings out details the shows cannot bring out. But I do usually want to read the book first.

Nice Complement to the Movie
Sometimes it's a good idea to see a movie first, then read the book. That way, if you liked the movie you're not disappointed in how Hollywood treated the story and the book provides a lot of extra information that adds to the framework and visuals you got from the movie. In this case, this is an elaboration on the screenplay but the same principle holds true. If you liked the movie, you'll really like this book. Louis L'Amour stayed true to the screenplay but provided a lot of extra information and background. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a little different from his other works that I have read and I think it might have been even better if it was entirely his from the start. It's still worth a read.

Just a perfect story bringing to life what we can only read ...
Just a perfect story bringing to life what we can only read about in history books. While L'Amour transcribes pretty much what was in the movie as written by James Webb, he also adds all the texture and backstory only a brilliant storyteller can add. The result is a fuller and more complete tale most will find more satisfying.Read it.

Good Historical Saga of the West
Louis L'Amour was not one of the most technical or long-winded writers, he was short, succinct, and to the point and had a way that grabs you into the story immediately. The descriptions of the scenery, events, people, and situations made you feel as if you were right there living it side-by-side with his characters. With this book, he expands that a little bit into a family saga of the 1800's. You learn about the ruggedness of the survivors and how quickly a life could be snuffed out with the weak and unlucky. As I type this review, the Kindle version of the book is $5.99 and it's a bargain - I certainly received more than that in entertainment value!

Always a great read from a great writer.
Great story of family struggles when going east to west, no greater than the way Mr. L'amour tells it. Not only do you read his books but you live them.

A history of the wild west
I have seen the film made after this book was written and always wanted to actually read it myself. The film is a slightly shorter version of the book, nonetheless it actually misses nothing out, as I remembered everything that was written was actually filmed and I believe the film makers did a perfect job, exact in every detail as it was written. I did enjoy reading the book but the film captures the stories excellently.

A good read.
It's hard to find fault with these books as the writer put so much into the research. I just love them.

wide open spaces for a city bound mind
I read this book thirty years ago. I found it on kindle and it is one that I will read again after all that time because when I read it I am the third unseen person in the scene in my mind and it is an easy read.

ok but not historic account or good novel.
I was looking for a true historic account of this exodus to the west. This is neither a good novel or a really good historic account. But gave me a bit of a flavour of both.

Great story
Watched the film years ago. Only just got around to reading the book. Great story, well told. Covers the progress of an extended family over a couple of generations. Certainly one of my favourite books in the genre.
