Hamlet (Norton Critical Editions)

shipped very fast. Norton Critical editions contain the work (in this case Hamlet) and essays pertaining to the work. I have been using them since college. Highly recommended.

Actually a good book and affordable for a college student

Classic read. Bought for class.

The additional content is really interesting but the actual textual notes are limited. I just got a copy of the Arden hamlet and I feel it provides a great deal more in-text notes and analysis. That said, this edition is valuable for the compilation of well chosen discussions included and I do recommend it.

This is a great edition of Hamlet. I think the attached literary criticism is relevant and interesting. I really appreciate the footnotes and the space in the margins for notes. The only thing that I wish I would have known is that this version is abridged in a few spots. It is nothing too major, but there are occasional lines or paragraphs that have been omitted.

I bought this book to save a little bit of money for college books. It arrived earlier than expected which I'm always happy about. I was surprised when I opened it and there were notes written in the margins since I thought I was getting a brand new book but that is on me for not paying attention. Anyways the notes artentiomctually help me understand the writing so I'm very happy with my purchase.

Nice and clean. The only regret is that I didn't know the newer edition had just come out this year.

Offenbar beziehen sich die Rezensionen hier auf sehr viele verschiedenen Hamlet-Ausgaben (Cambridge, Arden, No-Fear-Shakespaere etc.). Das ist sehr ärgerlich wenn man sich zwischen verschiedenen Studienausgaben entscheiden möchte. Ich beziehe mich auf die Norton Critical Edition von Robert Miola von 2011. Ich habe sie für mein Bachelor Seminar zu Early Modern Revenge Tragedies bestellt, weil ich eine Ausgabe brauchte, die Q2 verwendet (und nicht etwa einen "conflated text" aus Quarto 2 und Folio wie etwa die große Norton-Ausgabe). In der Regel liebe ich die Norton Critical Editions, weil sie es - im Gegensatz zu Arden - in den Annotationen nicht übertreiben, sondern ganz im Dienste der Lesbarkeit stehen und dazu oft sehr hilfreiche Zusatzmaterialien und wichtige Forschung liefern. Ersteres, d.h. der Text samt Anmerkungen, ist gelungen, die Auswahl der Materialien gefällt mir in diesem Fall jedoch nicht: Der Schwerpunkt liegt nicht auf wissenschaftlichen Interpretationsansätzen, sondern vor allem auf der Aufführungs-, Rezeptions- und Adaptionsgeschichte. Diese wird reichhaltig durch Rezensionen, Interviews und Textausschnitte aus den verschiedensten Hamletbearbeitungen, beispielsweise aus Tom Stopparts "Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are dead" oder Heiner Müllers "Hamletmaschine" dokumentiert. Die gewählten Ausschnitte sind dann aber wiederum so kurz und nichtssagend, dass man damit nichts anfangen kann und sich die entsprechenden Texte ohnehin in der vollständigen Fassung besorgen möchte. Am Ende wünscht man, der Herausgeber hätte sich für einen der möglichen Schwerpunkte entschieden und es in den anderen Bereichen bei weiterführenden Empfehlungen gelassen. Eine umfassende Bibliographie zur Hamletforschung fehlt stattdessen. Die Textfassung ist jedoch meiner Meinung nach die brauchbarste für den Unterricht.

The copy I received was used but more like abused. The last owner literally rewrote the entire play in familiar/normal language over the text. The original play is lost and it was useless for class.

This is 'The' book. It is amazing. Definitely buy this book if you are looking for a comprehensive in-depth understanding of Hamlet.
