Perfect book to inspire young readers.
I bought this book for my 8 year old granddaughter. I read it before I gave it to her and loved the book. As a matter of fact I sat down to read it and read the entire book. It was so interesting and easy to read that I didn’t put it down until I finished it. It is an inspirational book that is very well written and would inspire young readers.

Not just about chess
Suitable for children from age 10 to 14. Most interesting features of the book were the accounts of the struggles of this immigrant family from Nigeria to the USA. The remainder of the book is about learning and playing chess, which might be a bit boring for readers who have never played the game. Also includes several examples of how chess playing can be applied broadly to life and growing into ethical and responsible adults.

Inspiring
The difference between the young reader's version and the adult version is that the young readers are his accounts only; whereas the adult version includes the details from his parents of their harrowing journey. I loved it so much, I bought a copy for my niece. She turned 11 in July. He turns 11 in September, so I thought it was appropriate. So did she.

Bought it for my grandson
Graduation gift for my grandson. I read it so we can discuss it. He is 11 years old. It is a positive story, hopefully it will inspire him to always just do his best. There are many good life lessons in Tani’s story.

Powerful Reminder to Welcome and Value Immigrants and Refugees
I just loved reading Tani's story and how he found a safe place in America to follow his dreams and realize his potential. His family was in grave danger in Nigeria from the Boko Haram. Tani's parents made the brave decision to move to America so that they could be safe and live life without fear and threats. Through the generosity and kindness of MANY people including teachers, coaches, pastors, and strangers, AND the hard work, courage, perseverance of Tani and his family, they created a new life. America is better because Tani and his family live amongst us!

A book of courage and faith
I read a story in the AJC Newspaper in March about Tani and his book which was coming out in April and decided to preorder. Even though it was written for younger readers, I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Tani and his family. They came to America as refuges from Nigeria and they had many struggles along the way. A kind teacher encouraged Tani to take a chess class and it was life changing. This family’s courage and faith carried them through.

Great book full of positive messages. My grandson has fallen in love with this book.
During this pandemic I am using this book as a means to stay in touch with my oldest grandson who lives in the neighboring state. Tani is an easy read that provides insights into living a positive/confident life by use of the game of chess. We read a certain number of chapters each week and have a virtual meeting to discuss the book. Great one on one time with him.
