Let's be Honest
I bought Music for Piano and Drums and Flags when they were first released, and I've always loved them. Early on, getting them on CD was difficult, and they went for high prices. Today, well, you can get these here for very little money. Value = Good, MUSIC= Great. But this set? First the positives. The main one, of course, is price. I paid £13 for it delivered, and honestly that's great value. A fan of either Bruford or Moraz that doesn't have these titles, should fix that now. The set ships in a good old fashioned fatbox jewelcase, so if you hate digipac's, that should bring a smile to your face. Now for the bad, and the reason for my docking it 2 stars.First I'll say - yes it's cheap, but that's because, well, they cheaped out. You see, all of these albums have been previously released on Winterfold (which for the first two albums is largely a reissue of the old EG albums). When Winterfold reissued them, they added some bonus tracks - live versions of music from the initial two albums. Fine. All they did here was give the CD's some different face art and stuck them in a fatbox. So, if you have those previous reissues, there's no need to get this release (they're not remastered or anything).Things turn to the utterly bizarre however, and I can only say lazy, when it comes to those bonus tracks. Honestly, they should have removed them. Any right minded person would have removed those bonus tracks and left the albums intact and pristine. Why? Because the bonus tracks were taken from live CD - INCLUDED IN THE BOX. Seriously, it's a little mad. I get they didn't want to spend much money putting this together, but how much effort would it have taken? I'm not even going to lament the less than stellar sound quality of the live album (it's fine, but nothing special). What sense does it make to include bonus tracks from an album they're giving you in the same set? Lazy. Also of note - clearly the expense of touring with a Piano and drums was prohibitive, so instead of a piano we get a performance with an electronic keyboard/synth, with Bruford using his full array of electronic drums. This kind of destroys the concept, and honestly, that keyboard is/was terrible. Putting those tracks at the end of the album proper was never a good idea. Also, and this is purely cosmetic, that cover art. Yikes. Nasty. They would have done better to include the cover art for Music and Piano and Drums on the front, and Flags on the back. Instead we get...... I'm not sure what this is. It's just, bad. There's a 16 page booklet (which is formatted with every line centered, which looks a little odd), and it's fine. You get shots of the original covers, a little commentary, and credits for each CD, so that's something. So, here's the deal. This is a cheap set that looks and feels cheap - and if you don't already have these you should pick it up. If you have the original EG CD's, I'd not bother just to get the live album (which you can buy separately anyway if you really must have it). If you already have the Winterfold reissues, then again, there's no reason to get this - you have it already.Of course, I guessed this is what I'd get, but I decided to buy these again. So that's on me. Just know what you're getting, and decide for yourself. For me, it's like buying something new and finding it's been used.
