Excellent book
I'm a college instructor and I'm using this book as a textbook for a Medieval art course. It's very well written with plenty of pictures. Strongly recommend!

Perfect introduction to Medieval art
I have just read Art of the Middle Ages, and I must say it is the best introduction to Medieval art that I have ever read. Very well written, good photos, perfect selection of examples.

This book has some decent information for someone who has ...
This book has some decent information for someone who has not previously studied medieval art. It gives a basic overview, although it is obvious that the author has some favored topics. It covers very little on Byzantine art and Migration art, and in general, comes off as a little flat; failing to go into the nitty gritty details that make history interesting. I would not have purchased this book if it were not required for a class, but that is primarily because I already own a small collection of books on medieval art that cover most of the information in this book.

a very nice introduction
This book is an excellent introduction to Medieval art, covering temple architecture, sculpture, stained glass, reliquaries, illuminated manuscripts, icons and early paintings, tapestries, armor, castles, houses. The only things I can imagine that she might have included are coins and jewelry, but even omitting them this is an unusually complete coverage.Under each heading, she examines 3-4 good examples of the subject, and in many cases she concludes by listing all/many other notable examples. Of course she can't go into detail on every Gothic church in France, but she goes over the most famous ones, and then provides a good, long list of others.I happily recommend this to anyone travelling in France, as I was when I read it, because you'll have the opportunity to see many examples of Medieval art. I can also recommend this to students because the author rarely indulges in excessive verbiage, she writes fairly simply and straightforwardly.Along with this, if you're interested in the Middle Ages, let me recommend two books: and .

Waste of time and money
I wish this was more of an art style book vs a textual history lesson

It's a good grounding in the subject
I'm trawling through a number of early medieval art history books for a university course, and this one is so far the most clearly written and well ordered of all of them. It's a good grounding in the subject, and the best thing is it does not assume you are coming with vast amounts of knowledge on the subject and she explains terms and events as they arise.

history of archtectural art in western europe. mainly ecclesiastical
I borrowed this book from the library and found it interesting and informative. It was a good grounding in this subject including vocabulary, but leaving plenty of scope to research further if and when I so wish. I loved the illustrations. Personally I find he mostly black and white images easier to read from the point of view of design.
