Romulus My Father

OUTSTANDING FILM
This is a film that I won't forget. A film of suffering, sorrow and hope involving a man trying to bring up his young son alone. His task is made all the harder because he has his own demons to fight whilst sticking rigidly to his guiding principles of honesty, decency and the belief that a man's dignity is in his work. Throughout, the emotional shades of light and dark are illuminated by the wonderful imagery of the Victoria countryside.Superb acting, with a script which moves very fast. Sometimes in places too fast and makes you want to catch your breath or take a break to allow the emotions to settle before the next disaster hits. The book of course gives greater insight into the psychological and philosophical aspects but the film is largely truthful to the book. Two divergences bothered me a little. Firstly, we are told the film is set in 1960/61 when in fact it was 5 years earlier. Why would the producers do this? Secondly, there is a memorable scene in the film when Romulus fights with his friend and Raimond has to intervene to prevent a tragedy occurring. This is not mentioned in the book, so I am left a bit dissatisfied not knowing whether this episode was fact or fiction.
