Thoughtful and provocative...
A good summer read by Leah Franqui (you can put it down and come back to it without starting over). Not only does it lay bare the cultural divide between people but it gets you thinking about how many ways we constantly experience a "cultural divide."

Engaging.
Engaging. The ending was a little too neat, when throughout the novel the characters had been delightfully messy. However, definitely worth a read.

Eminently relatable
The unusual, to an American reader, setting of Mumbai provides a fascinating, colorful backdrop for this heartfelt story of two women getting to know themselves. Funny, poignant, and hopeful, Motherland is a worthy follow up to America For Beginners

Outstanding
This book is absolutely outstanding in every way. I could not put it down. The characters and plot are rich and complex. It is a testament to the human spirit and a person’s capacity to evolve.

Loved it!
I loved every bit of this novel. From the two main characters who have been very well developed. Also the descriptions of Mumbai and adjustment were so believable. They were just beautifully written passages that ring true to me and made me think. Would definitely highly recommend.

Great read and interesting look into Indian culture and daily life. I love the progression of the relationships and especially the complex generational, cultural, and familial aspects. Definitely recommend it.

Sometimes less is more
I would have been happier had the book been shorter. I understand telling the MIL’s story but did it have to be told again and again?Too wordy.

A tale of clashing cultures and personalities
A mother-in-law tale... but without jokes. An intimate exploration of a complex and difficult relationship between two women from very different cultures. Not always plausible, but real enough in seeing the compromises that they both have to make to achieve mutual respect and move on in their lives.
