Humanoids From the Deep

Enough personality to hold its own.
Firstly, don`t be put off by the fact this is imported from Spain. Although I myself suffered a senior moment when I failed to select the correct audio, which resulted in me watching in horror as Doug McClure rode around a harbour for five minutes talking in badly dubbed Spanish (with, as if to add insult to injury, accompanying Spanish subtitles), I eventually managed to find the English audio. The audio is ever so slightly out of sync with the pictures, however, but not enough to ruin the product; the picture itself is okay, but I didn`t expect any more.As for the film itself, it`s good fun, especially considering it was about 28 years since I last saw it. Things from your childhood are very rarely as rewarding when revisited in adulthood, and are often best left alone, but this film has enough personality to hold its own. One thing I didn`t remember, or perhaps more likely it didn`t register with me at the time, is the sexual nature of the salmons’ violence. It left me feeling slightly uncomfortable as an adult, although not uncomfortable enough to stop watching. This aspect of the film certainly does date proceedings, but it`s a mild attempt at sexploitation and is more clumsy than anything else. It feels more like an unashamedly gory horror film with a few boobs in it rather than anything more offensive or sinister. If anything, the boobs here are out of place. Maybe the producer watched it afterwards and said, “We need more boobs” and the editor put them in afterwards. Or maybe the director (a woman, incidentally) had a pay per boob clause in her contract and so stuck a few extra in.In summary: I can`t believe I watched this when I was ten.

Great film but a bit problematic…
I only really bought this release for Tim Murray’s liner notes as I already have the Scream Factory release. As for the movie I’m guessing If Bill Cosby was into genre movies this would be in his collection.

HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP BLURAY from 88 FILMS released 29/3/21
Some films are so bad they are almost good. This is so bad it is almost quite good! It is exploitation at it's best/worst. Apparently director Barbara Peeters and star(!) Ann Turkel were less than pleased at the additions to the finished film, put in by Roger Corman - Sex - near naked and naked lovely girls, and rape, though not explicit, it is obvious that is what the "Humanoids" want - to inseminate humans! It will be viewed as unpleasant and pure exploitation, but is it a good film? I didn't think so. Very poor acting from everyone except perhaps Vic Morrow who probably could play his role in his sleep (and may well have done so here). Everyone else gives the impression of reading their lines from an autocue. Even Doug is not at his "Amicus" best. Poor Ann is just way out of her comfort zone. What's to like? If I can be forgiven for saying...the women are very sexy, and the Monsters are good. There is gore aplenty for those who like it, and the climax, whilst ridiculous, is actually very effective. I can't say I enjoyed the film a lot, but I have seen worse. The BLURAY quality is nothing special, but good, and there are extras - Kim Newman is in there! and there is a good booklet and poster. Good subtitles. Why 88 FILMS went to so much trouble is a bit beyond me, but this should sell well, and good on them for giving us a chance to see a long forgotten film. Make of that remark what you will.

A Roger Corman Exploitation Monster Movie
1980 was a great year for horror, with The Shining, The Fog and The Changeling. 1980 also saw the release of a film that people don't talk about as much. Humanoids From The Deep is a low budget exploitation Roger Corman production so unnoteworthy that Roger Corman doesn't even mention it in his book How I Made A Hundred Movies In Hollywood And Never Lost A Dime.If Piranha was a rip off of Jaws, then this is an exploitative copy of The Creature From The Black Lagoon. The film is skillfully made, featuring a suspenseful score by James Horner, impressive monster make up effects by Rob Bottin, and was expertly edited by Mark Goldblatt. The actors Doug McClure,Vic Morrow and Ann Turkel are kind of slumming it in this lower budget production but Humanoids From The Deep remains a fun movie for undemanding horror fans.Impressive extras features a comprehensive making of documentary which detailed the troubled production and more explicit reshoots. There is an audio commentary featuring the ubiquitous Kim Newman's trademark snarky comments and obnoxious braying laughter. The other track with Samm Deighan is far more thoughtful and intelligent.Humanoids From The Deep is another excellent 88 Films blu ray release and a monster movie worth discovering.

humanoids from the deep
I first saw this in the early eighties at my local cinema.I liked it so much I went to see it more than twice. You can rely on a film with doug mcclure containing rubber (men in suits) monsters ( at the earths core/land that time forgot etc)But this is adults only gory entertainment.Looks dated by todays standards but stands out as a classic of the genre. On release the film was slated by womens libbers saying it degraded women and potrayed them as sex objects.Little did they know at the time that the film was directed by a woman. All in all if you have an 80 min timeslot you wont do worse than give this a try, its by far better than some of the CGI drivel on the shelves today.
