This story packs a punch
A stunning short story about one young girl’s struggle under the weight of patriarchy and familial expectations. It’s surprising and quite sad.

This world
The most upsetting part of this story is that so much is true. Especially of the feelings these poor girls have. It doesn't matter how good they are at anything, if you do not have money or are not a man! I don't understand how these traditions haven't changed?

Impactful and memorable
I learned of this author from an authors festival, which prompted me to purchase this short story prior to delving into her novels. In this short story, she relates how conscious and subconscious perceptions of people impact the emotional well-being of those affected by those perceptions. Her words are carefully chosen. She uses descriptions that evoke sensory experiences. Even though I am not part of that specific culture, I can see aspects of all societal groups in this short story. I can even see it in my own life with my own children. Our words and actions toward others can affect how they view themselves, which in turn, can impact their beliefs about themselves and eventually result in actions that further manifest those inaccurate beliefs. I didn't expect the ending, but that's what made it more impactful for me. This one, I will remember.

The emotion of a person who lived in the same age
I sincerely thank the author of this book. This book took me to my hometown about 40 years ago. Her delicate portrayal kept me standing there as a child. While reading, I could be with my mother in heaven. I would like to thank the author once again.

Tragic
Tragic short story about a poor family in Seoul, narrated by one of the four daughters. Noting the approbation her little brother, the fifth child, receives and contrasting that with the relative lack of worth accorded to her and her sisters, she realizes that no matter how hard she works or how well she does in school, nothing will make up for her having been born a girl. Very sad.

Took a turn I was not expecting
The story rang true. It is interesting how men have always had more rights to things. You'd think education was for everyone but it isn't like that everywhere.

This Story Will Break Your Heart
Ming Jin knows how to tug at readers’ heartstrings. Pachinko was my first introduction and I’ll never forget how that novel made me feel. I enjoy how the author tells these difficult stories without mincing words or sugarcoating emotions. It’s almost as if you’re witnessing real life. It forces you to really feel and think. My heart broke at the end of this story. No girl should ever have to feel that she is not valuable/loved/worthy just because she is a girl.

Too short for price
It is too short to charge for - should be a sample. Too 15 minutes to read.

Surpreendente e triste.
Agora tô aqui, deitada no chão, esperando um guindaste vir me levantar.

Realistic
After reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee I've no doubt on the author's ability to deal with such sensitive issues like gender discrimination and women place in society. This short story is impactful and hits right at the most vulnerable spots of a male centric society!
