Solid and reliable smoke detector from a trusted brand.
We purchased Kidde again as we've trusted this brand with our smoke detectors for decades, and our existing unit was at end of life. Really like the fact there are no replacement batteries...runs for 10 years and then needs a full replacement.**Caution**. The only thing that initially confused me is the "test" function only works when the unit is attached to the ceiling/wall mount itself. I first tried to test the unit out of the box, and nothing happened.I then noticed in the instructions the test feature will only work once the unit is attached to the circular mounting bracket. Recommend Kidde makes this more visible (perhaps a sticker on unit) to avoid false negative tests, as this is different than prior generation models.

Excellent, dependable detector.
Very good, easy to install and dependable. I replaced all five of my detectors this year in just a few minutes, as a New Years' gift to my family.

Seems to work well, but.....
This was simple to set up and install, and there aren't many false alarms. But... I haven't had a fire in the house, so I can't really say how it would perform under pressure! Also, although it says it has a ten-year battery, it still seemed fine on its ten year anniversary. Don't do what I did: keep it running to see how long it will really last. When it finally died three months later, it started beeping, and I could not get it to SHUT UP! There is a mechanism that is supposed stop the beeping, but it didn't work. I ended up having to destroy it with a hammer.

Worth the money
I just replaced mine. This is an eleven you review. I faithfully test twice a year during daylight savings to make sure they are still good. This specific one informed me of a fire that I could have lost my home to due to an electrical fire in my wall. It detected the smoke before 3 people did. It never goes off when it’s humid or if I am burning candles.(Maybe once or twice when I burned dinner.) It informed me when it needed to be replaced. The product works. Simple. Easy to us. Home and life saving. They have a life long customer from me.

So easy to install.
All parts for installation come in the same package with easy to read instructions. The alarm is so lightweight and they really do last ten years! My old one’s chirp alerted me it was time to replace. After searching several local stores unsuccessful, I found the same model on Amazon. It came quickly and I took it out of the box and inserted it in place using the former alarm’s base. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!

Garbage - poor engineering
This “10-year” smoke detector started nuisance alarming 9 months after installation. There was no smoke or other air quality issues at the location and temperature and humidity were within tolerance per Kidde’s specs. The unit continued to alarm even when relocated outside.I would have just chalked it up as another crappy product and let it go, but my annoyance from when I replaced it has motivated me to write this review.Because I did not want to drill additional holes into the surface the unit was mounted on I went with a different model of Kidde smoke detector that was of the same form factor and similar mounting style that I purchased from a local vendor. This new model “20SD10” promoted the feature of “reduced nuisance alarms”. We shall see.My annoyance is caused by the fact that although the mounting hole pattern is similar, it is in fact designed in a way that certainly will prevent the installer from using the same mounting holes. In the accompanying picture, you will see that there are holes and slots. The slots on the two models go opposite directions, making it extremely unlikely that the installer will get two existing holes in the mounting surface to match up with the new bracket. Additionally, the holes/slots are recessed, so just opening up a hole or slot in the plastic will not work. The installer is forced to drill in yet another hole to accommodate what should be a like-for-like replacement. Orienting the slots to bisect the radius rather that along the radius serves no purpose that I can see. With the slot oriented sling the radius the base could be adapted to different hole spacings. This is a textbook example of engineering that ignores the needs of the installer by taking no consideration of legacy products and the very likely scenario that the unit will be purchased by someone replacing an older unit from the same manufacturer or even from a different manufacturer.

Excellent Investment
I've purchased these in the past. Mine lasted one year, almost to the day, past the 10 years as indicated from the manufacturer. If you are replacing a one for one, they fit the same ceiling attachment from your previous Kidde Smoke Detectors. I recommend the one for one purchase. Just note, when installing there is a high pitch ear piercing beep when installing on the ceiling mount!
