An incredible game.
To begin with,Call of Cthulhu is and has always been an incredible game.Based upon the works of H.P. Lovecraft and others of the horror and sci-fi genre's,this game has great atmosphere.Taking on the roles of everyday people, called investigators, who eventually become entangled within the mysteries of the mythos. This can lead to some terrifying events for the investigators.Unlike games such as D&D or Pathfinder,Call of Cthulhu is not about direct combat, but surviving and avoiding combat if possible.Thats not to say that there wont ever be combat, but should be done so cautiously. The skills of the system uses percentile, aka d100,to resolve. This makes the flow very smooth when required to make checks, attacks, ect. The best part of Call of Cthulhu is the sanity system.During play, the investigators my stumble upon ancient and disturbing tomes, twisted and deadly creatures and other mythos(and sometimes non-mythos) related events that can shake the very fabric of the mind, which therefore causes sanity loss. This can result in some very interesting role playing situations. The default setting is the 1920's,but there are additional settings within the rulebook,1890's and present day. This allows different keepers(gamemasters) to play in any era they choose. The game is extremely fun and will entertain player's for years.I reccomend this game for it's ease of play and the pure theme of horror and the unknown that transpires. This game alone has earned more than 30 awards and has grown over the years.I understand that no rpg is perfect, and i am by no means stating such. But this game is incredible. The rulebook discusses the various sanity effects that can come about during play, disorders and other facets that can arise.Investigators can learn magic.(not the D&D or Pathfinder style),but a more darker form that taxes one's sanity to manipulate a power not meant to be known.I rated this game as 5 stars and is due mainly for the fact of the quality of fun and enjoyment in which it offers, and all with minimal hassel.Character creation takes a very minimal amout of time, which causes no delay in game time.If your a fan of horror or the unknown, and always wondered just how far one's sanity can be streched, this game is for you.But you dont need to take my word for it,but once you play this game,it'll speak for itself.

Great to Play, but Difficult to Master
The book came in perfect condition! The 4 is more to do with the book itself. It is very refreshing that it plays much differently than Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons, but the game doesn't feel as streamlined as it should be. Some examples:1. There is a STEEP learning curve. Like, STEEP. Although you can just jump right in with just a skim through of each chapter, to get the full experience, you truly have to KNOW this book. This is a huge problem as a Keeper. This is a difficult book to learn, and as a Keeper, sometimes you may be scratching your head when someone asks if they can do a certain action or not.2. The players have a lot of control. One thing that this game does wrong is give the players too much control. Given the subject matter, the story is very important and like any story, for it to be good, it has to generally be able to predict the actions of the players, or corral them in a general direction. One action by the player that a Keeper isn't expecting could potentially dismantle any follow-up to the story or shorten a game from 5 hours to 2. A lot of planning is involved with this game if you have a certain length you would like the campaign to be.It is a great game though. If you have players that respect the source material, who don't try to go in guns blazing, it is just as rewarding as if you are slaying legions of goblins in Pathfinder. Running from the Lovecraftian terrors and solving mysteries at the same time is truly a unique and enjoyable experience if done correctly. Hopefully, Chaosium will streamline it a little bit more though, in order for it to be easier to play AND to give a little more power to the Keeper.

This is insane...
There are so many awesome things about this RPG that I can barely contain my enthusiasm! But I really can't.1. The instructions for playing are clear and informative. The book also makes it very clear that the adventures require some sort of familiarity with the book and with the scenarios. It's not a book one can just pick up and play. However it's not something that requires a degree in rocket science in order to play.2. This game runs on the D100 system, which was an odd duck to learn. I have been playing D&D for about two years, and the transition between playing D20 to D100 was confusing for me. I can't speak for everybody on that though. Some people will pick it up faster than I.3. The book contains a very informative section on the mythos of Lovecraft, a detailed glossary of Old Ones, Monsters, Enemies, differences between the eras (1890's, 1920's, and Modern), and an incredibly detailed section defining each trait.4. This book contains 4 scenarios in the back, each with their various levels of difficulty and various levels of how well they're written. The only one I've had a problem with is Dead Man's Stomp, which contains an unruly amount of flavor-text for my tastes.5. If you're an experienced D&D player looking into this game, please take into consideration that "looting the room" is far less necessary than interrogations or library checks.Overall, this game is an awesome and refreshing game to DM and to play. Having knowledge in Lovecraftian mythos is not required, as you learn a LOT along the way!

In my opinion, this RPG system is the most versatile.
No complex tables, just a chance out of 100.

Excellent.
I love this game. The rule book has everything in it you will need except dice, paper, pens etc. It is a really fascinating book even if you don't play the game. I wouldn't recommend reading all of it if you are not planning on being a keeper during the games. There is a lot in here which will provide investigators with too much knowledge. That said, if your roleplaying is top notch that is not a problem. The book is fascinating and I read it often even if I am not even thinking of playing the game in the near future. Well worth the money even if you are merely curious.

Face the thing that should not be
The book is very thorough and the mechanics of the game are wonderful and intuitive (how could it be easier to say you have a 70% chance of success?). The game has so much to offer the player and has a realism that only adds to the awe inspiring atmosphere. The book is well designed. The Choasium website has 100s of scenarios for the investigator (or should that be fool?) who is willing to look into the dark mysteries of the world. A warning though, Cthulhu is a lethal game, if you think you will come out alive you may (but no guarantees) be right but you'll probably be insane as a result of seeing the mythos or maybe even the Great One himself! Enjoy this book, it is great.

Lovecraft's monster compendium
I bought this book as I wished to read more about Monsters and Creatures in the Cthulhu Mythos and I haven't been disappointed!Contains a wealth of information, "facts" etc about the Mythos and the creatures, Gods and Monsters with art work maps and other pictures, and as an added bonus contains the novella "call of Cthuhu'!And did i mention the RPG of the same name is also a part of this book??All in all essential for Lovecraft fans, RPG lovers, and also players of the new Board game "Mansions of Madness" and other Lovecraft related stuff

VERY easy to play
VERY easy to play. I had no RPG experience and lead a game as 'Keeper' (Dungeon Master/Games Master) and have ran about 6 or so games with friends who have never played an RPG before and all have loved it.Compare this to my first attempt at Pathfinder where after 8 hours we gave up on character creation and got drunk.
