Essential classic work of social movement theory
Sociologist Doug McAdam is a giant in the field of social movement studies. This classic work originally published in 1982 lays out in detail his critique of the classical model and resource mobilization theories, and then presents his own political process theory. PPT (especially the idea of political opportunities) have become one of the most popular conceptual tools for scholars of social movements and protests ever since. McAdam applies his PPT to the Civil Rights movement in great detail with ample, multiple sources of data. This version of the book also includes a very good new introduction chapter added in 1999 which discusses how PPT has been developed and used by scholars since its inception, as well as some of the criticisms it has received. This book is essential reading for any scholar of social movement theory.

For my senior year at Boca Prep International School my history teacher assigned us this book. To read, study and eventually do a project on. The content of this book is exceptional and helped me understand the topic. Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970, 2nd Edition by Doug McAdam was a useful book to understand the ways in which different organizations or institutions worked together to end segregation in America politically, economically and socially. There are nine well written chapters about the problem that occurred between 1930 and 1970 with Black Insurgency. McAdam is a credited author who went to school from Stanford and is an author or Co-author of over a dozen books and/or articles. His field was mainly around the social movements in the U.S. and the Civil Rights Movement. He wants people to know about the topic in full detail and the minor things that added up to one whole entity. As an African American born into the late 20th century and lived throughout the early 21st century, I have always been intrigued about the Civil Rights Movement and Black Insurgency. Living in America was not easy for Blacks and I wanted to learn about how different races managed to integrate with each other and break the barriers of racism and segregation. This book explained all of this and more about how blacks were aided politically, socially and economically. If you are interested in the dynamics of the civil rights movement then you should definitely read this book. If you are doing research on social movements this book is also good for that. There are a lot of sections in the book where it mentions the many individual movements that made up the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. In this book the author presents a political process model that explains the rise and decline if the black protest movement in the United States. Moving from theoretical concerns to empirical analysis, he focuses on the crucial role of three institutions that foster protest: black churches, black colleges, and Southern chapters of the NAACP. He concludes that political opportunities a heightened sense of political efficacy and the development of these three institutions played a central role in shaping the civil rights movement. There is so much to learn about this topic and it says it all in this book. There is nothing that it is not covered in this book and it would be wise for some people to use the information in this book for online resources so people don’t just have to buy this book to know what McAdams wrote. Also people need to understand what people had to go through, to create in order to defeat the racism that was being created. This book can change people’s minds for the better. If they are not stubborn enough one deep read of this wonderful book, people will understand the horrible effects of racism that blacks have been experiencing since the beginning of time. You should definitely read this book.

great analysis
We first used this book in Dr. Skocpol's class in Chicago, & it has become an invaluable resource on how to study social movements. I often refer to it in class--along with other now-classic analyses--and a colleague is using it as required reading this coming Spring.
