The lid fits over the outside just enough to keep water and snow out.

Q: I know it says not for use to snuff fire, but what is the downside if I use it to keep a dying fire from spitting embers? Discoloration? Warping?

Mine is outside all yeari in the northeast with no problem. Lid makes a nice little table and is heavy enough to stay put in windy weather.
