Weird!: A Story About Dealing with Bullying in Schools (Weird Series)

This is a totally awesome series for talking with your kid about friends and bullies
Kiddo (4th grade) was having clique issues and we were trying to talk through "what does it mean to be a friend" "what does it mean when my friend makes fun of me or ignores me" etc. These books (all 3!) were fantastic conversation prompts. They present the same situation from the 3 viewpoints (bullied, bully, and friend afraid of being bullied) and in each case the main characters has strengths and weaknesses that are discussed ... and they each find a way to be truer to themselves and kinder people. Really nice.

Get the set at once!
I wish I had known there’d a set of 3 books. I highly recommend. My 3 year old experienced exclusion at the playground and I was shocked that at such a young age, girls can be mean. This has helped her understand how it’s bound to happen and it isn’t HER fault

FABULOUS!
This book series is absolutely FABULOUS! The books in this series are: Weird! Dare! and Tough! As a parent of a child who was bullied, as a sister of a first grade teacher and as a Certified Early Intervention Specialist I can say that these books are like no others I have seen. Beautifully illustrated (using color as a way to signify the changes that children undergo when bullied), well written in child friendly language with detailed and meaningful activities in the back for parents and educators, complete with a wide variety of resources on bully prevention- these books have been highly praised by bully experts and have been endorsed by the International Reading Association. There are not a lot of books out there that speak from the victim, bystander and bully perspectives that are also targeted to elementary school students. The books are written and illustrated so you are able to have meaningful conversations with your children about this important issue.Buy these books- read them to your children, give them to your children's teachers, donate copies to your school's and public library. (We have.) They are a must have- very on point, yet not intimidating. All three books are very powerful and I highly recommend them. If I could give them 10 stars I would- and my children and their classmates give them "two thumbs up"! Trust me, these books are headed for big things!

The Weird Series provided a means of change for our students, K-4. It was amazing to be a part of the children’s journey.
I purchased this series to use in my Anti-bullying campaign at a K-4 school in TX. The entire series was a great hit with me, the teachers, and most important, the children. I visited every classroom, read the books aloud to the students, and utilized almost every support idea included in the back of the books. I even made videos of me reading the books, and we projected them on the wall in the gymnasium so we could have more students participating at the same time. I cannot praise this series enough. The content and the artwork all work together to engage the children. Through the ideas in Ms. Frankel’s storyline, we adopted the technique of rallying around the person being bullied, and the “bully.” My favorite moments were when children would stop by to share their stories of successfully shutting down a “bully” in thier class by surrounding them with kindness. I wholeheartedly recommend the entire Weird Series, and the follow-up Nobody - from a boy’s perspective.

A book series based on love!!! A must for any school ready kid.
What an amazing learning tool! I just received all three of the books from this lovely series in the mail today. They are beautifully illustrated with characters that you are instantly drawn to. I had pre-ordered them based on a recommendation from a friend. I read all three immediately and fell in love with all of the characters, even the bully who I was able to feel compassion for. As a kid who was teased and bullied growing up I recall my elementary school years as traumatizing and the most emotionally painful periods of my life. These books would have been a shining light for me. I immersed myself in reading as a means of escape as soon as I could read and boy do I wish I had them then. These books will be an amazing tool for kids to communicate with parents, teachers and classmates. I am excited for all the kids that will find relief and joy in these books.

Happy child
Our daughter says she was bullied last year, so I purchased this after seeing the recommendation from "A mighty girl". It is her most frequented selection for story time. Worth it!

Navigating social situations
My first and favorite book in the series was called Dare, and it was brought to my attention by my six-year-old granddaughter who read it over and over ! I like that this book was connected to the other two but addressed a slightly different issue .

Empowering! This set of 3 books explain perfectly what girl's bullying looks & feels like
Bought the full set of 3 for my 7 year old daughter - you do need all 3, as they compliment each other, and give a round view of a bullying situation from 3 different perspectives. They also contain ideas and discussion tools to help your child talk about their experience. The books have really helped my daughter understand what is happening to her (as the one being bullied), and also how other people in the scenario might be feeling. It's given her (and us!) the language and resources to speak to the school clearly and effectively about what is, otherwise, something very difficult to pin down and deal with. Every school should have a set of these books!
