Waiting to hear from customer service
OK, I'm not an idiot, most of the time. I took my 55 gallon tank down over 10 years ago but in this time of covid I thought I should have something to stare at besides TV. I was running an Eheim filter before but was missing some parts and as with everything in life was just cheaper to buy a whole new system. I research everything thoroughly before deciding. This one came in with great reviews. Indeed nice, easy compact system with great in and out put. Priming was very easy as well once I discovered you had to do that before you plugged it in. DUH. Large sized hoses. Probably could have got away with the 500 as my new tank is only 40. But in cases like this more IS better. I would rate it a solid 5 stars but.... I CANNOT turn off the water flow when doing maintenance. As i said, I understand water flow, gravity, valves etc. Because I went with the Fluval Stratum I have had to constantly replace my floss. Three times. First time read the three steps to do maintenance with leaving the hoses in tank. Not that hard. Turn off input, stop water flow in, disconnect tubing. Did that and ended up hosing down my walls, floors while I grabbed something for the water. Have a solid top tank, so by the time I removed the light strip and yanked out the intake tube there were quite a few gallons of carefully cycled water lost. Took my shop vac, fans and heaters to cleanup the mess. The cannister was still full of water so when I disconnected the output hose same thing. Not as much though of course. Thought I MUST be doing something wrong so second time, read the steps again but same result. At least I was better prepared this time. Same with third time. I have always used external filters and they all work pretty well the same. Have contacted customer service so will see what they say and will update. Its driving me crazy. Unless I somehow got a faulty unit? Looking forward to having some dry towels again.Dec. 27 update:I have NEVER hated a product as much as this. In fact I have never really hated anything/anybody up till now. The reason I bought this was all the excellent reviews, plus the price was reasonable. Did some re-scaping and stirred up my stratum so thought might as well do the filter as well. All good. Two of us had to spell each other off, as someone else mentioned its like performing CPR. Well, after 2.5 hours, including the 3 times I reopened the cannister to make sure the gaskets were lined up, I had to call time of death. I actually have a blister on the heel of my hand. Was soooo mad I took it and threw it across the yard, shattering it. Lucky I had my 'toy' filter on the tank as well. At least the water had some filtration going until I could get out and buy a different one. Another problem of this one is that it has a sizable gap between the cannister wall and the media baskets where the water will pass through unfiltered. If you insist on using this I would recommend stuffing that gap with something- floss, strips of sponge.

Noisy !!!!
Yes it is powerful, yes it is convenient in its size, yes it is very easy to assemble, but .......1- it takes forever to prime ( i thought i’m doing a CPR)2- yesssss it is very noisy, no matter how much i changed the position of it, you still her the repeller (very disappointing) not like the “Marlin” which are supper quiet.3- why the bottom head cover keeps falling apart ?????!!!!!!!!!4- As you can see in the photos above, the wholes on the sides of the head !!!! No idea if it should be there any wholes. I’m very skeptical about it, but lets wait and see.

Great pump.
This works great, minimal noise on the pump itself.Took some positioning to stop the water from creating too much noise coming out and hitting the top of the water... but that is entirely based on how I use it, and was able to fix it by re positioning and adjusting valves.Easy to clean / change the filters and the install was straight forward.
