Lack of research
I really wanted to like this book. It's based in Bristol and I'm Bristolian. It's not a badly written novel, though there's lot of exposition that gets quite tiring after a while, and the killer and their motivation was fairly obvious by the halfway point. What I struggled most with was the lackadaisical attitude of the DCI, who when informed of a missing persons investigation sent to them isn't the first to know (she's supposedly the DCI and should therefore have been informing her DI of the report and leaving him/her to handle it, except in this CID unit there doesn't appear to be one). Avon Police are actually called Avon and Somerset. There's no MIT in their head office in Portishead. There's a major crimes department within the department who deal with all major (serious) cases but unless it's murder, rape, or armed robbery it wouldn't be investigated by them. The missing persons team, who would have been investigating the missing man's disappearance, not the Murder Investigation Team, to which she refers would have been members of her own unit (working within the sand building and liaising with them if a missing person was believed to be a victim of a serial killer due to a shared physical profile, so would have been on hand to, well, liase with. The DCI is lazy, makes lots of comments that make it sound like she doesn't care about the outcome of the case, the victims, or her job, and gets her DS and DC to do all the legwork. Vital investigative queries are not, well, queried. The police don't check CCTV of the streets surrounding the missing man's home (Clifton is full of cameras). Theyl team don't appear to be looking for the missing mans bike. They don't check with the nearby gyms themselves. They don't consider the wife, the missing mans family, or friends important enough to call to speak to to find out if he's not missing but maybe has just gone to stay with any of them. They don't pursue things until told by the wife to do so. By the end I'd figured out how it would conclude long before and was just skimming the pages to see if I was right. When writing crime fiction you have to get the procedural aspects right. The author is not solely to blame for this though, the editors clearly didn't check the facts before publishing the book. Because these kinds of errors wouldn't typically pass an editor, and certainly wouldn't make it as far as publication. This is the third book I've read this year published by One More Chapter, and all of them have been easy reads with similar issues, so I won't bother buying any more.

A novel of strengths and weaknesses. Overall a good read.
A clever and original plot sustains the novel. However it also leads to all manner of implausubilities. DCI Helena Dickens gives way far too easily to an obsessive reading of the situation. She works well as a personality as does DS Clarke, but neither show any great powers of perception,or indeed of common sense. The small number of credible suspects also leaves too little in doubt. Nonetheless the narrative moves along rapidly and the suspense is kept at a high level. The writing is unremarkable. There are rather too many cliches and we find yet another author who doesn't know the difference between uninterested and disinterested.

Psychological thriller with a twist, sorry make that several twists.
I finished TPC last night and all I can say is wow, wow and double wow. I went to bed at 930 a hundred pages in and couldn't sleep until I finished.Haven't read a book in a day since before my daughter was born and that's nearly 11 years, I have only finished 3 entire books over LD but the meticulous plot and the finely judged pacing meant I couldn't stop turning the pages, it reminded me of Michael Connelly and even that master of LA Noir doesn't get the one day treatment.I loved the finish and hopefully more to come from the main characters and the hard working rozzers at Brissle Nick.10/10 and the rolling narrative and potential for wonderful locations in Bristol/Clifton and the west of Ireland means I wouldn't be a bit surprised if got adapted for TV.Well done to the Author.
