timps saved my feet
at 61, i thought i would have to quit trail running because i was getting a "blood blister" on the pad under my big toe where the bone was literally pushing through (which was devastating since i only began at 60 and it was the only exercise i ever liked and stuck with). being diabetic, i wanted to avoid any damage and started cushioning it heavily-- first corn pads, then gel half-foot glove things, then wrapping all that in tape to stay in place, which it didn't, i tried insoles, hokas, a combo of all of it, but nothing relieved the pain. but when i tried altras the zero drop (they are the same height from toe to heel) evidently took enough pressure off that i was fine, no pain at all, even without anything except thin socks. evidently as we age we lose fat in the pads of our feet (yeah, of all the places to lose fat.......) and the extra pressure of daily hikes/runs was too much. i never knew a couple mm's height in the heel could make a difference, but it does. all altra's are zero drop, some have more cushion, some different soles, the timps are my personal favorite. as far as i know no other company makes cushioned zero drop shoes, but at least altra makes lots to choose from. i threw the other stuff away and have no more nerve pain.
