Yes and no. Spilled liquids would barely soak through past the fabric so it won't soak through to your desk. Clean up should be easy with a moist cloth There is a slight lip to it as well so liquids that doesn't get into the fabric will not run over the edge too easily. Though truthfully I've not spilled anything on mine yet.

I've seen a couple of reviews mention a distinct smell with the mouse pad. Can this be confirmed or denied?

It had the smell that a lot of plastic and rubber things have when you first unpack them, but it went away after a few hours of being aired out.

Is the rubber base made of latex rubber?

The base of the mousepad is rubber but it's unclear if it's Latex or another composition of rubber blend. The sellers phone number isn't listed and no description of specific rubber blends aren't mentioned in the product description listing. This goes out to anyone who is Allergic to things like latex or otherwise.. I understand your frustration.

It's pretty thin. It's the thickness of a standard mousepad, just extra large. I also got wrist pads to place at the base of my keyboard and my mouse
