Left me desperate for the next in the series!
Loved the first book in this series, and i think enjoyed this one even more. After the mid point in this (2nd) book, the plot changes tack and the protagonist has to do some detective work. I felt this section dragged a little and could've benefited from some tighter editing. However, it's still an outstanding book. The world Dabos builds is captivating, and the story really starts to pick up with some major pay offs towards the end, which have left me desperate for book 3!It's a huge shame so few UK readers know about this series, one of the best things I've read this decade. Do yourself a favour and buy them all!

A rollercoaster of fantasy
Hold on tight for another magical adventure . The world of Rowling and Pullman are ever present but this is even more surreal. The plot twists and turns with an array of mystifying characters and events .The visual descriptions are superb. Ophelia is a brilliantly realised character and pulls the reader into every dilemma. It’s a lengthy book and you have to focus upon who belongs to which family but the journey is exhilarating.

Unique gem of a fantasy book
I loved the second instalment of this series -even more than the first part, which surprised me. The characters grow and develop, the story is well-paced (and seems to be a bit more linear than A Winter’s Promise, which is maybe not a surprise, as we have already established the world setting) and many of the questions readers will have from the first book get answered. Still, plenty of new questions arise that make it hard to wait for book three! I will say that this book (and the previous one) is quite a slow burner, and the story develops at quite an... ambling pace. But that fitted well with the writing style, and if anything, made it more enjoyable for me. It felt like a book that needs to be savoured. I loved Ophelia, Thorn, Farouk and everyone else so much, I bought this and A Winter’s Promise (the first book in the series) for all my friends.

Good
the book two is also fresh, unique, engrossing and entertaining. Not without some faults but they are easily forgivable. Really looking forward to the next book.
