Second to Nun, Chuck!
The oddly named Wii Nunchuk is an extention controller that plugs into the Wii remote, the main controller for Wii games. Many games can be played perfectly well without the Nunchuk, but for others, this controller is essential, and adds an extra dimension to gameplay. When you buy the Wii, you are supplied with one remote and one Nunchuk. Therefore, if two people want to play the games, they need at least another remote, but if the game requires a Nunchuk, they will need to buy one of those too, as they are not sold together with the remotes (very clever, Nintendo!).The product itself is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand comfortably, and has a thumb operated joysick on the top and two buttons at the front, where you place your index and middle fingers respectively. Your other two fingers curl underneath the curved underside of the Nunchuk in a "trigger" position. The Nunchuk is very lightweight and comfortable to hold in the hand. There is a wire running from the bottom of the Nunchuk which has a connector at the end that slots into the bottom of the Wii remote. The wire can be a bit awkward and get in your way during some games, although it is possible to get wireless Nunchuks. The Nunchuk itself does not need any batteries, as it is powered by the Wii remote, which takes two AA batteries. The Nunchuk can be used in either hand during gameplay, though if you are right handed, you would usually hold the Nunchuk in your left hand. The Nunchuk is used in many different ways in gaming on the Wii. One of the main games that we play on our Wii is Donkey Kong Jet Race, which is a very simple kids racing game in which you propel yourself along by frantically "drumming" the remote and Nunchuk alternately. As we play this game so often, we have 3 remotes and 3 Nunchuks so that we can race each other, as there is no way to play the game without the Nunchuk attatchment. In some games, the Nunchuk is optional, such as Mario and Sonic at the Olympic (and winter) games. The events, such as running can be played by waving the remote up and down, but if you attatch the Nunchuk you get a more realistic running action which involves waving the two controllers alternately. In the Fifa football games, you can also play with or without the attatchment, though the Nunchuk adds a lot to the gameplay by enabling you to control your players more effectively. In many shooting games, you can move around using the joystick on the Nunchuk and use the remote as a gun, or use the two controllers like boxing gloves in games like Wii fit and Wii sports. We tend to use our Nunchuk controllers quite a lot when we play on the Wii, but have found the odd problem, such as getting tangled up in the wires! Another problem is if you start a game with the analog stick not in the central neutral position. This can cause the controls to be unresponsive when you start the game. We have had our controllers for nearly two years now, and they are showing little sign of wear and tear, apart from one of them, which can be unreliable at times. I have put a sticker on it to distinguish it from my two good Nunchuks. In conclusion, if you want to get the most out of the Wii, the Nunchuk is pretty essential, as sooner or later you are going to encounter a game which requires it to be connected. It is a shame that Nintendo do not sell the remotes and Nunchuks together in packs, as you really need to buy both together to get the best gaming experience. The one that comes included with the Wii is white, but you can buy "skins" in a variety of designs and colours to personalise your nunchuk to your own taste.
