Amazing
1 of the best books I have ever read about a time period in which I was not as familiar. Enlightening & for anyone who reads historical fiction this is a must read. So well-written & descriptive. This book brings you right into the lives of the characters & keeps you invested in their lives !

Superb book, hard to put down
This book really opens your eyes and helps you understand what the people of our country went through during the Dust Bowl years. It was hard to read how incredibly difficult it was to live & survive those times, all they endured. I love stories where you actually learn from history, and this book was certainly that. The author's writing was exceptional. However, I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5, just because of the utter hopelessness of Elsa's life-- it was so overwhelming, and never ending. I know life is not a fairy tale, but I was disappointed with the ending. I so wanted a happy-ever-after ending for Elsa after a lifetime of hard work and heartache. But overall, an unforgettable read.

Gut-wrenching and beautiful
If you know me, you know I don’t give or give star ratings easily. This is a story that will stick with me.Kristin Hannah’s writing is perfection. She makes me feel like I’m right there with the main characters in the best and worst ways. I felt all the pain and heartache and frustration and longing so deeply I honestly had to take breaks at times.Whether you like historical fiction or not, I cannot recommend this enough! Books like this are why I love to read ❤️

American Warrior
This story was so powerful, so rich. I love historical fiction and this book didn’t disappoint. A family rich in love that held together during the most difficult of times. A story of strength and perseverance during the Great Depression where a young mother drove her two children from the Great Plains out West to California hoping for a better life but only to be treated like vagrants by their fellow Americans. I couldn’t put this book down. I will remember the strength of these characters for some time to come. Kristin Hannah is such an amazing author! Highly recommended!!

An unforgettable historical novel of epic proportions!
The Four Winds is an epic historical novel that takes the reader back to The Great Depression and a family who suffered through it all. This involves the greatest generation of all, for they were the strongest, most resilient and determined to make a life for themselves despite the dire circumstances of nature, other events, and heartache. This was a tough book to read because it involved so much heartbreak as the author takes us through the daily life of this family and all their struggles. The main protagonist Elsa is a woman who has been unloved by her family, mistreated by her husband and not accepted by her daughter. All Elsa wants is to love and be loved, something that she has desperately needed all her life. She struggles to be a good wife, mother, and eventual daughter-in-law when she moves in with her in-laws after being ostracized by her parents when she realizes she is pregnant.Elsa discovers that she is loved and needed by her mother- and father-in-law but not appreciated by her husband for what she is, a hard worker who is determined to make a good life for herself and her family. It was difficult to watch Elsa with her struggles and how she never gave up even after her husband abandoned her and their two children. There is mention of how the immigrants from one state to another were mistreated and shunned by others, exploited by the cotton and fruit plantations, and forced to grovel and somehow survive reminiscent of some of the problems in our society today. An unforgettable and epic read that I highly recommend. Be prepared to feel the heart wrenching despair of the characters told expertly through this amazing author's prose.

4.5 - really so good
Nightengale and The Women are 5s…this was so good, but not as good. An incredible story of strong women…just what you expect from KH.

25% of book is propaganda
The last 25% of the book is blatantly glorifying communism. Pathetic way to make money in a capitalist America, enjoying free speech all while fawning over communism. Make it make sense. HARD pass on this one. Not happy my time was wasted. (5 star is an attempt to get my review seen so others who value their freedom and time can be warned)

Better than the Nightingale
I gave this novel a try after all the positive accolades. I wasn’t expecting much, but was hoping it would be better than the Nightgale, which was a generous 4/5 for me. This met and exceeded my expectations. It’s much better written, very gripping, with flawed characters that you want to root for. There is so much history and I loved learning what I wasn’t taught in school. The daily hardships of life at that time and in that region were brought to life in such a moving way. The struggles of a single mother were so eloquently developed and described. The dialogues felt real and human. This kind of book makes you appreciate life in the 21st century, and be grateful for all the things we take for granted. To those giving this book a low rating because of the ending: 1) grow up; 2) perhaps you should stick to the Hallmark channel; 3) what better ending than your child achieving what you wished them to be when they were born? You won’t regret reading this one.

Breathtaking
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah is a breathtakingly powerful novel on par, in my opinion, with classics such as To Kill A Mockingbird and The Color Purple. A magnificent blend of history with an emotionally gripping narrative, Hannah masterfully captures the spirit of survival and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her children. The vivid descriptions, rich character development, and themes of perseverance and sacrifice make this book deeply moving and unforgettable. Absolutely riveting.
