Easy and Fun Cooking for your Dog
What a helpful book! We have a 12 pound Yorkie-Poodle mix we rescued 6 months ago from a shelter. She was very thin stray less than 10 pounds when we got her, so I was surprised it was very hard to get her to eat. I never met a dog who needed to be coaxed to eat and wouldn't finish her meals until our Penelope. We tried several high quality commercial foods, but she didn't like them much. Canned, dried, nope. Then she developed an inflamed colon and the vet suggested we cook chicken and rice for her as she was being treated. Suddenly, our little dog loved to eat. She loved real food! I wanted to find out more about making your own dog food, did my research, and found Rick Woodford on the web, I tried a recipe from one of his videos and I knew I had to get his book. This is a wonderful book! There is a lot of information here about nutrition and how a variety of real foods can help your dog be healthier while really enjoying their food. The information is solid, and my vet liked the book as well. The recipes are pretty simple to put together, and we can assemble a nice big casserole pan of mutt loaf that will supply our girl with 24 twice-daily meals in about 15 minutes, plus an hour of baking time. And the food is fun! Who would have thought a dog would enjoy a microwaved egg cooked with oatmeal and shredded apple? It smelled so good that we made an extra batch for the humans in the house to eat as she enjoyed hers.I like Rick's writing. He has a good way of explaining nutritional details in an engaging way. And I appreciate that he does not scorn commercial food. He talks about it being helpful for macro-nutrients and how you can continue to use it and supplement with fresh, homemade food for micro-nutrients. In other words, he's not a snob about feeding your dog. A few months later, we have a bright-eyed, energetic dog who is full of energy and radiates good health. I am a total Dog Food dude fan.

Yummy recipes for your best friend!
My fur child was diagnosed with GERD. In spite of the fact that she was eating a high quality grain free dry food she continues to have problems with her food and her tummy. She was miserable. Our vet tried her on a one protein and one carb ( chicken and rice) but she was still sick. We decided to switch to ground sirloin; I saw this book and we agreed that the recipes and advice sounded good. Many of the recipes do contain chicken and they all sound amazing, but we chose to start with one of the beef recipes. It actually was suggested that we use it as a topper over dry food…but with the addition of some other veggies and a good multiple vitamin, for now it has become my dog's diet and she is so much better! She is a rescue and she has suffered from GERD since the first few days that we got her. We have tried numerous five star dry foods and nothing helped until I began cooking for her. What I like about this cookbook is the fact that the author/chef has made it easy to adjust portions according to your dog's weight. The ingredients are easy to find; there is nothing exotic or difficult about the recipes. He explains things so that even a novice cook (or a lazy one like me) can understand and there are wonderful photos for each recipe.Unlike a lot of the cookbooks for dogs that are out there…there is nothing controversial here…and the recipes are healthy and good for your dog. I wish my girl could enjoy some of the chicken recipes but for now we are glad that the vomiting has stopped (knock on wood) and that she seems to be thriving. Her coat is thick and luxurious, she has more energy. And she loves her food!I am SO glad that I decided to order this book. It is apparent that much research went into each and every recipe. It's no wonder that it is Amazon's #1 cookbook for your dog! Whenever I make a batch of food for my girl, my husband gets so excited…he thinks I am finally cooking for him. I tell him that there is no reason why he can't eat it…it's so much better than risking the health and safety of your beloved pet. With all of the dog food recalls and safety issues concerning the pet food industry, I do not mind cooking for my dog at all. It is so much cheaper than paying vet bills.

Brilliant Practical Book For Getting Your Dog Eating Properly Again - Don't Wait Till He's Ill Though!
I love this book and its turned things around for us, along with finding a brilliant group of people who have been through the same problem - [...]. My dog was recently diagnosed with SLO - an auto immune disease which makes his toe nails fall out. The treatment is Tetracycline and Nicotinamide with plenty of fish oil - 180 mcg EPA per 10lb of dog. The fish oil is for life and hopefully the drugs can drop once he gets to remission but that takes a few months. So I've been trying to get quite a few pills down him, giving him daily footbaths which he's not too keen on and he can't always have long walks because his nails are too painful. Not surprising that he's not as chirpy as usual for a normally fit and active nearly 12 year old Staffie cross! His appetite has been slowly deteriorating to the extent that he even went off liver and roast beef which were my fail safe ways of enticing him to stay in the footbath for ten minutes and getting the pills down. The Yahoo SLO Group gave me a few great ideas but he wouldn't eat any commercial dog food at all (even the very best!) so I was worried about his salt and fat content, lack of some minerals and nutrients, and loss of weight. I bought this book and another one but this one suits me best by far - easy recipes, a good guide to what is good, bad and "ok", loads of different types of recipes (treats, meals, etc) and tips and very easy to navigate around. Our kitchen is always full of nice aromas, my dog has perked up no end and I'm eating better too now I have such good ingredients in stock!Scrambled eggs for breakfast takes two minutes and goes down a storm, we always have some doggy chicken stock on the go to liven things up and I'm looking forward to trying more recipes. If you're in despair with a fussy eater, this is the book for you, but if you simply want to do the best you can for your dog, like most of us do, this book will give you the confidence to ensure your dog's diet is as healthy and varied as it really ought to be, without breaking your piggy or time bank! You don't have to spend hours cooking and you can, like the author, mix things up with some shop bought dog food and some home made. I wondered if all this "human stuff" might make him even more picky but it hasn't - it's just made him start enjoying his food again.
