The Building Blocks of Grammar: Visual Reference Guide for Children

Inspired! This is the way it should be done.
Grammar should be an exciting subject. After all, language is what makes us human, and grammar helps us understand how it works. But it must be one of the least popular subjects in any school. All too often it is taught as a dull set of rules - or at least it was in my day.The idea you can learn grammar by playing with colourful building blocks is inspired.Lego is the largest toy company in the world for a reason - building blocks are simply the most enjoyable, versatile and educational toy you can give to a kid. And Minecraft, which was the direct inspiration for this volume, is the world's favourite computer game.Use this method, and kids will barely notice that they are learning!I particularly like the way that the book opens by showing how the different parts of speech can progressively enrich the meaning of a sentence. This explains the whole point of grammar, and is rarely explicitly explained in basic texts. Personally, I'd like to have seen that idea expanded on a little more, but that's only a slight niggle.I don't think this stands on its own as a grammar tutor - it covers a lot of ground, the pace is quite fast and I think that most kids would need some of the gaps filled in as they work through the chapters. But as an inspiring resource for teachers and home-schoolers this is as good as it gets. I literally can't think of a better way that grammar could be taught. And because the author has a flair for simplification and visual analogy, it's also a pretty useful resource for any adults looking to understand the foundations of English, whether native speakers or adult learners. Compared to slogging through the usual slabs of dense text and tables, this is much more accessible.Highly recommended!

Grammar made fun!
I think a lot of young people are going to actually enjoy learning grammar with this book. I think a lot of older people might wish they had a copy of it too. A resource from Lidia Stanton that makes complicated easy.

Would recommend
What a great book. All of her books are fantastic - particular for dyslexic learners. I have been a teacher for years and recommend her books to my parents all the time. Not expensive either. Win win !
