Gummed paper type ideal in the right situation
Reinforced gummed paper tape is ideal where strength and/or durability are needed. On cardboard boxes, even plastic tape with acrylic-based adhesive can't compare to this kind of paper tape under storage conditions (I have several hundred cardboard containers in un-air conditioned storage units, which remain intact after five years- just keep them off the concrete). Also, properly applied, I prefer this tape on cardboard boxes that are heavy, even just for shipping. But... it's a lot more work to use gummed tape, since the adhesive (starch-based) has to be moistened, and only after the piece has been cut to length; in terms of speed, it can't compare to using a hand-held dispenser for plastic tape which also cuts as part of application. One way around this, a dispensing machine for gummed paper tape (it can be set for a given length, and moistens/cuts automatically) would likely only be feasible where a large number of boxes were involved (and yes, I have one of those as well).

Perfect solution for my needs
YB Packaging Reinforced Gummed Kraft Paper Tape, for Sealing and Packaging, Commercial Quality #233 After dealing with the frustration of clear tape not holding and the expense of strapping tape (which also sometimes failed to hold), I bought a roll of this reinforced kraft paper tape. I was leery, but several reviews were quite positive and offered helpful advice about how to wet the tape. I am really glad I bought this! I use a spray bottle to mist the adhesive side of the tape, and that works well for me. If I ever remember to buy a sponge, I'll try the damp sponge wetting technique and see which I prefer. This tape is heavy kraft paper, the adhesive activates immediately upon getting wet, and the bond holds firmly once the glue (and the tape) dries. I'm sure I'll keep the clear tape on hand for other uses, but for taping boxes, I think this product is far superior.

Absolutely the best for sending packages, period
Please give up that clear adhesive tape you've been using to seal your packages and start using this tape. It's thick, sturdy, and really sticks. It's very easy to use, although you might have a slight learning curve on how much to wet the tape. I put a little water in the bottom of a saucepan or cake pan, then let my sponge get thoroughly wet. Squeeze it a bit, then swipe the tape once down its length. Make sure you wet the full width of the tape - it's easy to miss the sides. Wetter is better than drier when you first start using it, because re-wetting doesn't work all that well. It's so much easier to work with, and so much more reliable than the so-called "heavy-duty" clear packing tape. Moreover, it's far cheaper in the long run. It's a no-brainer, really. Buy this tape.

This is the Stuff!
This bonds very well to cardboard and the reinforcement fibers add to the strength. After using it once, I was hooked. The only thing to remember is, the full and ultimate strength of this tape won't kick in until it's had a few moments to dry. That's my observation, but I wouldn't call it a problem. You'll need scissors to cut this; due to the reinforcing fibers, you cannot tear a piece off the roll.By comparison, I've found that plastic packaging tapes are very hit-and-miss. The best ones are just OK, and the worse ones hardly stick at all.Have re-ordered. Will do so again.

This type of tape I truthfully don't see much difference ...
This type of tape I truthfully don't see much difference between brands except for the price. One thing I did notice is that the roll I recieved did not have a core to help keep the inner winds in place ,hence the 4 stars. As an after thought I would not reccomend this to anyone who is going to try and mount the tape in a dispenser with any kind of center pivot as it would soon become problematic.

Great!
Worked great. I found it very easy to use, I just had to seal one box though. I just cut it the length I needed, wet a paper towel, rubbed it on the gummy side and stuck it to the box - easy peasy!

Works great! Could use an inner spool because roll unwinds at the center and becomes loose. If they would moisten the first few windings as they start the roll that might be all they need to do to create an inner spool.
