Loving, but Odd
I'm a huge fan of Fred Rogers, but I was disappointed in this book. I bought a copy to see if it would be appropriate for one or more of my grandchildren. The prompts seem odd for almost any audience I can think of--from grandchildren to spouses to parents. "There's only one person like you in the whole world, ___________________" doesn't leave much room for creativity. Or "You were as brave as Lady Elaine when you ________________." "Our friendship grew stronger when _____________________" doesn't feel quite right for my 5-year-old granddaughter ; "the best way you show your love isn't through words, it's through _______________" talks down to adults, on the other hand. Pictures of Mr. Rogers throughout are distracting; he inspired the prompts, but a variety of love-inspiring things (flowers, puppies?) would reinforce his message better.
