Photographers on Photography: How They See, Think and Shoot

Great read like others in the series
I have read three others by the same author that have been more instructional and really helpful but this one is very different and an excellent read. Different in that it reads more like 40 or 50 brief interviews with accomplished or famous photographers with an accompanying photo illustrating their style or approach. It is really interesting to read the motives, methods and thoughts of those who have achieved at the highest levels in the genre. I found it helpful to make me think more about why I am composing specific images and what i am trying to capture or convey. There are diverse opinions but all of them are thought provoking and an inspiration to any photographer going beyond the mere 'point and click' or narrow technical considerations of photo taking or making.

Full of excellent examples
I love the authors work. He has opened up photography for me. Technically before I understood the principles, but Henry makes them understandable and enjoyable. This book presents lots of examples of creative work. I made some notes and followed a few accounts on Instagram, I no doubt over time will learn more from the influence of the photographers and artists I have chosen to follow. In this book Henry signposts the reader to further resources to help them develop a greater appreciation for the art of photography. That, what I would say is part of what it's about. And all of what it's about for many of the artists in this book.I would recommend this. It's a lovely book and well worth your time :)

Non-technical book on photography
I've been reading this whole series of books (I recommend you do too) and this is the most artistic and least technical of them. It covers a series of great photographers and explains how they approach the art of photography. To that end it is very interesting. It will not tell you what apperture to use for a portrait, or whether to use a 50mm or an 85mm lens. It doesn't matter if you are using your phone to take photos or a Hasselblad. This is about the image. The writing style is engaging and entertaining.

Great book.
If you’ve read ‘Why it doesn’t always have to be in focus’, you’ll get this book.Another great Hanry Carrol read.

Dirty marks and dent on book
When book arrived in package there was a few dirty marks and dent in the cover. As this was a present for someone else this was disappointing. Will just go to bookshop the next time.

Not quite as good as 50 Paths by Michael Freeman
I have enjoyed this book. Format is generally: Full page image, big headline and half a page of text for each of the 50 photographers covered. A handful of longer interviews which are generally quite interesting. This creates a concise summary that is easy to dip into. Some thought provoking material but not as practically helpful as Michael Freeman's "Fifty Paths to Creative photography" which starts with the style/ philosophy rather than the photographer.A good quick read though.

Almost Pointless
What do you expect from a book titled as this one? Photographers talking about their decisions when they made the shot, which objects they wanted to include and why they excluded others? Maybe even the technical aspects of some challenging photograph. You will find only a few of those helpful insights in this book. Instead sentences like, "If his camera was a Stradivarius, Penn never misplayed a note. If it was a scalpel, he perceived perfection with every cut." or, "Never mind the hand of God - when we look 'into' this photograph, we are presented with the hand of Ansel Adams." make you cringe. More about Adams (paraphrased): "He beat the beauty of nature with his pictures." Wait what? It's a very nice collection of photos though. I just wished, the author wasn't worshipping.

Excellent!
I've read Henry Carroll's other photography books and loved them all but this is my favourite. The selection of images is excellent and the author's accompanying text is very enlightening and actually very inspirational. Overall a great insight into the art form, with excellent quotes, illuminating writing and fascinating interviews that examines many different aspects and possibilities of photography. Five out of five!
